I checked Arthur's front teeth last night, which i haven't done in ages, and now i feel so guilty for being a bad piggy mum. His right top incisor has snapped. this would explain why he hasn't been at his favourite corn on the cob or carrot. I will watch his weight carefully (he has always been our smallest pig), and am happy to syringe/suppliment feed if neccessary. He's also got an skin infection (being treated) so he needs all the nutrients he can get.

i've done a thread search, and found this helpful thread:

but i was wondering how long it will take for the tooth to grow back?

many thanks
Becca

How badly is it broken?

A tooth that is even broken to gum level is usually back at full length within a week to ten days. :)

they usual grow back quick

cut his vege up smaller & that should help him a bit he'll find away to eat other things mine always have when they've broke a tooth xx

Gosh, hadn't realised it grew that quick! two thirds of tooth broken off (so getting on for a centimetre lost). i'm not sure when he did it, but if it grows that quick it must have been in past few days. he does bite the bars when agitated, and we were hoovering at the weekend .... ")

Biting the bars is a common cause of broken teeth! I've had a few serial cage biters in my time, luckily only one chipped her tooth. She broke it almost halfway down and it had grown in fully in around 5 days.

Piggie teeth do grow very quick!

that'll do biting the bars the question is is he still doing it now he's broken a tooth?
charlie stop doing the biting of bars when he broke his top teeth fingers crossed your little one will stop too xx

My Sonny once broke his tooth biting on the bars! It grew back really quick! My Pheobe took a tumble out her hutch, a few days later all her teeth fell out (root and all) and I went on honey moon a day or two later! I really wanted to stay home, as did my then fiance, but I called Laura and she reassured me that the teeth would grow back quick! My mum and I were in constant emails and my ToothyPheebs (her new nickname!) was fine during the two weeks, even though she only had her back teeth and when we finally got home I went and had a look at her gaps, only to find four gorgeous, sparkley white teeth! all present and correct. So if a tooth can grow back in less than a fortnight, roots and all, I'm sure it'll be fine in a couple of days! xxxxxx best of luck xxxxxx

The thread you found was what I posted when Chewy broke his tooth biting the bars. It grew back within a week - although it didn't stop him bar biting mallethead

If the growth centre of the root is damaged there is a possibility that the tooth will not grow back.
Some people suggest trimming the opposing tooth to the same length as the broken tooth. The theory is that both teeth will grow at the same rate and meet in the middle. Don't bother is my advice, you can create more problems than you will solve. Leave well alone.

if only one incisor is broken then you do not need to trim the teeth but if , say, both upper incisors are broken you need to trim the lower incisors to the same sort of length otherwise they will overgrow. make sure you use correct equipment or take to a rodentologist, else you can split the tooth.
hope this makes sense!

Just an update. Broken tooth is almost the same length already. But i think there is a crack in the original tooth, also still blood and bruising around the root. I will monitor closely.

Thanks for your help and advice - it was a bit scary at first, but now i understand it a common problem. I'm feeling more confident about it now.
