How safe is neutering?

I recently adopted 3 female guinea pigs. 2 turned out to be pregnant. When i took the babies to the rescue to be sexed I discovered my 3rd female to be male and my mums to be pregnant again. The rescue has taken the male and the oldest litter but I am regreting handing in the male. Should I get him neutered and how long will he be fertile for?
 
castration is fairly safe with a good vet :) i think the the boar should be seperated for about 4weeks after castration :)
 
wow sounds like a rescue that doesn't know what its up to?! Unless I've got the wrong end of the stick? They let you adopt 3 guineas and one was male?! Then two female guineas got pregnant?
To answer your question, I don't think castration is a big operation, like maisynpoppy said, get a good vet. And yep wait 4 weeks before putting him in with any girls
 
welcome to the forums from me and the girls from oz. as for your question as with all surgeries there are risk to the piggy especially with stress and infection. and the antibiotics play havoac with a piggies tummy so you need a probiotic.
but if you find a good vet then his chances will be better, hoping your girls will be alright being pregnant again so soon after their last litter. sending hugs to you, your girls and your little boy piggy :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: girls send :-* :-* :-* perhaps if you got the piggies from a rescue i would go back and tell them 2 were girls and one was a boy. good luck, i would get your little man back and get him fixed and after 4 weeks put him back slowly with the girls. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Sorry to disagree with you but castration in any species is a huge operation - even without the anaesthetic risk there are lots of other complications that can (and sadly all too often do) arise. Having said that there are plenty of success stories out there too. I would deffo consider getting the boar back from the rescue centre and contemplate neutering - a lot of rescues have this done already to boars before rehoming. They may be able to recommend a cavy savvy vet who is experienced with this delicate op. Good luck on whatever you decide to do. O0
 
I have to agree with Black Jack, castration is a huge operation. You really need a cavy savy vet who explains all the risks and the after care involved - I would still consider getting your boar back from the rescue centre and having him neutered - my 2 boys are both castrated and now happily living with there girlfriends :smitten:

I was advised to leave them 6 weeks before putting them in with a female though O0

Yes it is a big op but if he is young then he should be ok but there is still a isk of infection. just be on hand with all his fav veggies and lots of cuddles. My Tucker was up running aound after 3 days.

If they are already preg then I personally don't see the point of keeping him sepeated once he is recovered, goodluck with whatever you decide to do x
 
I had my Oakley neutered last week he was fine. My vet has good success rates for piggies. I keep them on towels for a couple of weeks afterwards changing them three times a day.
 
I totall agree with black jack & minimicheele, my friend had her 6 month old rottweiler spayed yesterday and sadly she had a massive heart attack due to the anathestic
 
Any operation is a risk, def. find out how many times the vet has neutered a guinea pig previously - many may never have done so!

The alternative is to bond your boar with a very young boar and have them as a pair? This can be succesful.

All operations are risky, just find a vet who knows his/her stuff! I have to get my Rabbit spayed in a couple of months and I'm worried about it but at the same time the pros out weigh the cons. With pigs though I always try and pair up with a boar. I've a little fella coming soon (still nameless ::)) But with any luck he will be paired with Twinkle if that doesn't work I will get the little guy neutered. I will have no option as I don't want to keep getting boars because they've had a barny! :)
 
I agree that any kind of operation is risky. I took my rabbit Thumper to be neutered last year and he had a heart attack while he was under the anesthetic and died, i now have another rabbit and i wont be putting him in to get neutered.
