... would it be safe to introduce a piggie to others?

I'm currently "fostering" Winnie who was found wandering in a park with mange/mites and having been bitten by something :( She's doing really well in terms of eating, drinking and confidence and likes to hear my other girlies chattering. It's as good as a done-deal that she is staying permanently but need to plan for when I can introduce her.

She had her first Invermectin treatment on June 26th and I've been given another pipette for July 10th and another for July 24th (she came to me via a friend who rescues bunnies so I didn't see the vet myself).

So - how long do I need to wait until Winnie is "safe" to be put with Artoo & Blizzy? Thanks!

Aww bless, sounds like Winnie has found herself a lovely home - congrats. :)

The first dose of ivermectin kills off the living mites but may not catch all the eggs, so new mites could hatch within a few days of the previous treatment. Second dose will kill those newly hatched and any eggs they have managed to lay, and third dose should eradicate all mites and their eggs.

You can dose more frequently than every 2 weeks though - 7-14 days is the norm with 10 being the average and generally effective, so you could safely change dosing dates to July 6th and July 16th.

Personally I would wait until after the second dose at least before introducing her to other pigs.

We'll probably be going into the vet this week with one of our bunnies anyway - so will have a chat with her then (and pop Winnie along too). x
