Hello everyone - I rather unexpectedly became mum to two 5 month old girl guinea pigs today. We've had piggies before, but not for the last couple of years and I've only had boys before.

The girls were living in seperate cages before, but I introduced them to one another this evening (in the bath, on towels!) - it went very well, so I tried them in a cage together - still fine. I can pick them up together, they have had their supper together, and they seem to be very chilled out. It's been about 5 hours now.

The million dollar question is - do I leave them together overnight or is that too risky?

I've taken the bed compartment out of the cage - I'm thinking they are less likely to have a set-to about who goes in through the door first?

Any help gratefully received - otherwise I may just have to stay up all night to keep an eye on them @)

Oh it is lovely to have piggies in the house again :-)

Best wishes, Jane

Hi Jane,

Welcome to the forum. :) If the girls are fine I would leave them. By seperating you go through the whole bonding process again. Girls are easier to bond than boys so you shouldn't have a problem.

Maybe in the morning put them together, by nighttime they should be settled and you can leave them.

Good luck and look forward to chatting,

Louise

Thanks Louise - that's good to know that girls are easier to bond. I had terrible trouble with trying to bond adult boys in the past so was a bit nervous this time. The girls are currently eating and making happy noises and it took WEEKS to get the boys to even sit in seperate cages next to one another! Phew, it will be SOOOO good if this works out :-)

Would it be a bit extreme to take the cage upstairs tonight and put it on the bed next to me I wonder..... LOL

He he, I don't think you would be the only person on here to take piggies into their rooms. Hope it all works out well. xx

You could do if you are a heavy sleeper! Haha! They may keep you up if they start playing.

:)

The first two nights I left my girls all together i slept in the living room with them on a camp bed, so when i heard noises i could check on them and make sure there was no fighting as the introductions did not go quite as smoothly as yours has.

There was me thinking I was just a crazy on my own - I'm happy I'm not alone

Sounds like your girlies are going to be very happy friends

I just wanted to say thanks for the advice and reassurance last night - the girls were fine all night (yes, I did take the cage up and put it on the bed next to me!) and seem very happy this morning too! Hurrah!

Best wishes, Jane

I added one to my profile last night - it's not great as I took it on my phone. If you click on my user name the gorgeous girlies should be there :-)

I'll try and persuade someone to lend me a camera that can cope better!
