My guinea pig’s name is Brownie. She’s been with me for about 2 years but to this day, she is absolutely terrified. If I walk by her cage, she will stand absolutely still until I walk away or if I get too close to her cage, she will bolt to her hidey or to the nearest dark corner she can find. If I try to pick her up, she will keep running away. Sometimes, I try to take her out and I set up a play pen area but she will do nothing but stay still for the next hour or run to a dark place. I give her toys to play with, treats, veggies, hay, but she is too scared to walk even two steps to eat them. She won’t even eat out of my hand. She seems to really enjoy it when I pet her but yet, she is still terrified of me. When I pet her, she relaxes and lays down, she spreads her body and purrs, but then she chatters her teeth at me. I’m so confused with her behavior. I remember last summer I would take her out every single day for about five hours each day, trying to get her used to me, but she never changed. I can’t do anything with her. She currently lives alone as my parents won’t get me another guinea pig. I did have another guinea pig, Ginger, whom she lived with but they did not have a good relationship. Ginger would always nip her whenever Brownie touched her and came too close. Brownie was terrified of her. They never slept together, cuddled together, or even ate out of the same food bowl because Ginger would nip her. Maybe Ginger’s dominant behavior is the cause for Brownie’s skittishness? I’m unsure of what to do now and how to develop and bond with my guinea pig.
