Not sure if this is in the right section, but still...

I'm a kind of lurkery person, and I've learnt so much from just browsing around this forum and the links from it. But one thing I haven't seen mentioned - how to brush an Abysinnian pigpig. It's usually obvious, with most animals, to brush along the grain and not against the way the hair lies flat, but their hair doesn't lie flat, so which way is the 'grain'?

Just wondering because it's something that just occured to me, and I might be getting one from the North Shields sanctuary next weekend.

I don't think you need to brush their hair? I don't brush ours and they are both Abys.

Somebody might correct me though as I am fairly new to piggies myself!

I have 2 aby x's and when they came to me they had 4 huge tugs in there hair, I had to cut them out, so I was thinking they would need brushed to stop this reoccuring. I haven't brushed them and its been 3 months, I just run my fingers though there fur, but they are kept on fleece which probably helps too :). No more tugs :).

I've brush my Aby's, I just tend to use a small brush and brush in the direction that the hair goes. I find brushing helps keep their hair really soft (along with baths every now and again).

I think brushing in the direction of hair growth applies more to pigs who are entered in shows.

I don't feel it matters particuarly to pets. I've had/got three Abys and they all dislike their hair being stroked or brushed any other way than straight from head to rump, try going along the pattern of hair growth and they complain. rolleyes

Thats interesting Laura. Mine don't seem to mind if I stroke/brush them in the direction that their hair growth. They seem to enjoy it as much as when I stroke them from head to rump.
