Dental How To Encourage Gp To Eat Veg After Dental Surgery?

That's great to hear!
We're up early this morning to drive from Leeds to Northampton to see Kim!

While she is in the mood for eating you should try lots of different things, and see what she'll take. Spinach leaves with long stalks are also good!

Just had a great veggie session (after 21ml of Recovery) , cut strips of a few different veg as thin and stiff as I could, and she was really going for it, she even tried taking them from the bowl herself but couldn't manage that so I was handing them to her. So happy! :)

Just had our evening veg :) Thought I'd post a photo of what has been successful in case it helps others - various bits cut into very thin strips. She was trying to pick them up herself but unless they are coincidentally sticking up the right way and don't move, I had to hold them for her.

Leaps and bounds... this morning she's managing to pull them in by herself (I have them sticking up out of the side of the bowl). Plus, she weighs 840g this morning! No wonder the last two feeds yesterday she stopped me at 14ml each time!

What did she weigh before? Does this mean she's eating when your not there? Eating herself -This is amazing news, I'm chuffed for you both.

She weight 800g at 7:30am yesterday morning, then 822g at 1pm, and this morning 840g. She took 87.5ml CC yesterday (plus the veg she ate). I haven't seen her try and eat any hay whatsoever, unless she has secretly been doing so in the night :D I did manage to put one stalk in her mouth yesterday that she did successfully chew and eat but the few other times i offered she wasn't interested.

She's now even digging about in the bowl and managing to pick up bits that aren't even sticking up! yay!

I just caught her (she's back in the cage) trying determinedly to eat a little dried dandelion head (from the Burgess dandelion & marigold feeding hay)! It was just a tad too big for her to manage! She then wandered around as if trying to find something she could pick up, but no sign of her actually doing it and she wouldn't accept bits of hay from my hand. But who knows, in the night perhaps she was managing to nibble on bits...

Just now Stormy was trying to pick up nuggets! The best I saw her manage was getting one in her mouth and then spitting it out again. Can toothless piggies manage nuggets as they are or should they always been softened?

She was also paying a lot of interest in a bundle of hay I gave her but wasn't trying to pick them up the way she was the veg so it never happened... I have a feeling it will be soon though!

Their absolute favourite is Beaphar Care+, no other nuggets provoke the same enthusiasm! We were once out of them for a week or two and had different ones instead, and when we got another pack they were all over them, very funny. They are bigger than the Burgess ones - they did used to like the blackcurrant & oregano ones, maybe I'll try those again for her. :)

Great to hear that Stormy is improving, @StormyMidnight ! :)
@furryfriends (TEAS) , do you have any advice about how to get Pendleton eating hay again? He had more dental work with Kim yesterday, and is still eating veg by himself, but not managing any hay. I really want to be able to reduce the syringe feeding, but I think he will just lose weight if i do that.

Ditto, though I know it's still early days for us :)
Good to hear Pendleton is still eating veg by himself even after more dental work :)

By the way, have you tried actually putting a piece of hay in his mouth even if he is not proactively accepting it, like I assume you will have had to do with the syringe some of the time? (most of the time, in my case!) Just to see if he can happily chew it? I did that yesterday with one piece of hay, and she managed it fine once it was there (I was hoping it would help her realise she can handle the hay and thus would voluntarily try taking it, as that seemed to be what happened with the veg ... she hasn't yet though! So I might try doing that a few more times as long as she does outright struggle and refuse it).

*as long as she DOESN'T outright struggle and refuse it! (I just reread my post :D )

I just had a hay breakthrough! Doing what I suggested above, in fact - I'm sat with her at syringe feeding time but first managed to pop a piece of hay in her mouth, she took a while chewing it, halfway through I experimentally pulled it out, but she wanted it straight back! and she's now on her 4th strand of hay! Almost like she needed to be shown that lightbulb woah i can do this moment... She's reaching out for them (I'm holding them). YAY. She's eating them slowly compared to how she used to but clearly just getting used to it :) Have you tried anything like that with Pendleton?

I have a piggie with some missing front teeth, he gets on just fine with the science selective grain free version. They are a very small nugget, I’ve not found anything smaller for him yet. Luckily he really likes them.

She is looking so much better as well, no more hunching and squinting. She was obviously in a lot of pain before.
She's taking her time with that piece of hay bless her, it's quite a thick one! ...

Now i have the problem that I want to go to bed but ought to give her some syringe food to make sure she's ok for the night... but am waiting for her to be done with the hay... she's still digging about for more :D

She's like a new animal! Rushing to the side with the others for pieces of veg (we normally give them a goodnight treat!), and then I refreshed the nuggets in the bowl and she literally BOUNDED over to it and is now crunching on a nugget! (a Care+ one) It's like she's suddenly realised I'M ME AGAIN or something...

I have to tear myself away to go to bed and will be interested to see how much she weighs in the morning...
