Dental How To Encourage Gp To Eat Veg After Dental Surgery?

Yes. Tentatively, anyway! Keeping everything crossed she gets into the swing of things, and that the regular shaving of her top incisors doesn't put her out too much for example... or Simon's next job in a couple of weeks...

Came down this morning to find Stormy at the nuggets :) And wheeking at me excitedly (none of the others did - they know 6am is too early for morning veg :D I will never understand how the piggies know what time it is!). She weighs 888g! (48g more than yesterday morning). How do I know when/how much to reduce the syringe feed? Do I want to keep feeding her in order for her to be putting on all the weight she needs to be back up to her old weight (1kg) or can I expect her to continue weighing less than that - or, if she gets back to eating as much as she ever did herself, will she put on the weight naturally anyway without syringe feeding?

I would cut the syringe feeding right back. Just do a top up after breakfast and a top up in the evening. It may take a while for her weight to go back to where it was, but you want her to be using her teeth as much as possible, so they wear properly. If she is still holding weight after a couple of days, I would then cut one of the syringe feeds out, give it another couple of days and cut the other one out too.

Thanks. I gave her 10ml (all that she tolerated) first thing, I'll watch how she's doing (whether she's eating hay etc) throughout the day :) She's munching on her little bowl of strips of veg now, independently :)

This is such amazing news, keeping fingers crossed for Stormy that she keeps improving today.
My boy has to have his top incisors done regularly and he totally got the hang of it. They don’t use any aesthetic and as soon as they put him back into the carrier he chomps on hay. So there is hope.

:yahoo::clap::D

I haven't seen her eating hay yet this morning, although she hasn't had much of a chance yet...

Give her time she was chomping on it yesterday so she knows she can. Piggy's favourite food is grass and hay.

I have just popped loads of fresh hay in the hutch this morning to keep them warm (Wouldn't believe it May tomorrow would you?) as well as the snuggle safes. All 5 of mine are happily chomping away so I'll probably have to top it up by lunchtime.

Thanks. Our grids & correx cage is just over half fleece, the rest newspaper & meadow hay, cleaned out every day, plus two small hay racks that I refill once or twice a day with Burgess Timothy feeding hay (dandelion & marigold), So they have constant access to hay. :)
Payday today (phew!) - so can now look at getting in grass options!

She's just been having a munch on hay :) Crossing everything that this continues. Will be shouting if any more problems!

Hope @Rusholme will be back and that Pendleton is okay..?

Also just noticed that she's doing those soft poos and eating them (at least, I assume from her behaviour), haven't seen her do that since this whole thing :) Was wondering about that.

All going well, she's continued to eat hay and nuggets and her veg, with excited wheeking at veg time..Weight is still increasing despite having reduced the syringe feeding! (gave her 11ml this morning, and 2 x 11ml yesterday). Ironic that just as I got the hang of the syringe feeding I'm able to reduce it!

I've also moved today's planned check up at our "local" (still over an hour to get there...) exotics vet, to Thursday, I can't bear to disrupt her calm only a day after she's getting back to normal! I checked in with them about meds though, reducing the Loxicom to once a day and I've taken her off the gut stimulant as well :)

Well, we had a day all day yesterday no syringe feeding, the day before only 11ml first thing, and she's still gaining weight. But this morning she's got a little upper respiratory snuffle. Totally well in herself, still wheeking loudly and enthusiastically eating the veg and nuggets (and hay presumably, she's not had a chance yet this morning!). Got the exotics vet check up this afternoon thankfully.

Aw not so good about the snuffles my Toby has them since February, we're back at the vets tonight too! Hopefully both of them will be snuffle free soon.

I'm glad to hear she's still got her appetite.

A couple of hours after my last post, she gave a cough and hasn't snuffled since! I think she must've just got a little something stuck in her wind pipe.

All good at vet, I brought a few strips of veg to show him what she's been eating and she even demonstrated for him there and then how she eats them :D Normally she's scared at the vet's, she's clearly better :D

Hope your Toby rids himself of his snuffles soon.

That’s great news! Did your vet mind that you had taken Stormy to Simon? I really hope they didn’t, as she’s doing so well x

He didn't mind me going for a second opinion I don't think, & pleased with her progress.

ok I've now noticed that she may have bumblefoot, see photo, am I right (the dark scab near the heel). It's on both feet. If so, what should I do? Our local vet is open Sundays if you think I should take her there tomorrow (can't do that today).

I've also just given her a wash of her underside because she had somehow weed over her tummy or else sat in a very wet patch (happens occasionally!) She's sat in the towel with me, shivering bless her. (normal for bath time - we don't bath them often, btw, only if something like this happens), and happily eating yellow pepper (thought I'd better give her a bit of Vit. C!)

She's lost 20g since yesterday morning, but still enthusiastically was eating veg this morning. (She is our loudest wheeker now, louder than she has been for ages in fact!) Last night she was still eating nuggets and hay. I'm wondering whether she's eating as much hay as she should esp given she's a bit slower than she used to be (yesterday I began rationing the nuggets for that reason, usually they're readily available, because she's very keen on those) but her poos are looking completely normal now (inc this morning), back to the right size etc.

I have noticed a bit of squinting (in one eye only tho) this morning again, indicating pain of some sort ... :/ She's been off the Loxicom since the last dose Thurs AM. Maybe I should put her back on?

I've just put her in her cage and she's wandered around as happily as ever and is now eating the fresh hay there, no squinting or anything.

Definitely taking her to the vet this afternoon... orange discharge from the feet (I assume) over her bum :( Other than that, she seems fine in herself, weight is back on, eating hay and veg happily... assuming from googling it may be a case of creams/antibiotics/soaking the feet/maybe even bandaging the feet for a bit while they heal...? I'm assuming that given nothing had changed at all in sanitation of the cage etc (we clean it out every day, no sign of problems in the other piggies), it is probably due to her compromised immune system following all that's happened.. bless her... just as she had got better!

Oh no poor Stormy, it couldn't be urine scald does she have a tendency to sit where she urinates?

It might well be caused by urine scold, considering her tummy was covered in wee yesterday. It does happen very occasionally (not all that often), she must've sat right where she'd weed. Hopefully we can get all the treatment sorted ASAP and get it cleared up quickly. I've read soaking in an Epsom salt solution should help too...?

On the plus side, she's not showing any sign of it paining her. I've now got her out in her own pen with a blanket so that she's not walking through the hay section of the cage spreading her discharge :/ and so that it's soft on her feet. She's happily been eating nuggets or else resting in the fleece pigwam.

@StormyMidnight Epsom salts work well but they're really drying so they're not recommended for constant use

Hibiscrub is great and the vets use it too, so they should be able to give you some to use. And you can get it in Boots if you need more.

I find VetBed to be helpful when they have bumblefoot or are wetting themselves. Even just small squares where they lay that can be swapped out regularly.

Let us know how the vet visit goes
