How do you estimate the age of a piggie?
one of my girls was said to be 1.5yrs old when we got her, but I think she may be older. Any ideas on how to age pigs?

There is no sure fire way to tell, i usually go by nails though...... but they usually stay about the same after the year - year and a half point onwards x

Younger pigs have straight pointy (sharp) nails, older piggies nails seem to get thicker and curl sideways..... and are usually a darker kind of yellowy colour. Certianly the front ones anyway. x

I just got my 1 year old and 3 year old boar out to compare and you're absolutely right! The 1 year old's are like needles, but the 3 year old's bend slightly to the sides and are much thicker.

Thanks Toffeewoffee! I had never really associated this with age before. You learn something new every day :) x

Aw glad what i said made sense, i was looking through my photobucket account to see if i had some comparison pictures but they weren't very clear, so i am glad you could compare your boars.

Like i say, i noticed that with my toffee, her nails started to bend slightly when she got to about a year and 3 or 4 months, so its only a good gauge upto about that age, other than that i am not sure how to tell the age. x

When I got Pedro & Panda from the rescue centre the lady there estimated them at a year to 18 months. They could be older but she said they were at least that old...she was judging them by the enormous size of their testicles:o
