Hi I have two new male guinea pigs and I feed them and give them treats often I'm here to see what is good for them.
I have two bowls of pellets and two water bottles. And a feeder of hay.
I am currently giving them vita guinea pig formula pellets
And Timothy hay.
I'm trying to see what other hay I can buy for them or that is healthy,
The Timothy hay is allergic for my wife and my baby. It has to go.
My wife recently got pinkeye she went to the hospital that said it was due to extreme sudden allergies. Sudden because we just got the piggies.
I have a bag of treats involving everything to raisins to pumpkin seeds to nuts ect.
We give them slice of apply once a week. Little piece of broccoli once every two days or so.
And a whole carrot everyday each piggie.
I don't know if I'm over feeding them. And I've been giving them more than usual lately because I read when I give them lap time I put them in a towel snuggly and give them a lot of treats.
My pig moo moo was doing loud teeth chattering so I gave him two whole carrots because I wanted him to get use to me? I don't know what to do. Do they need a diet or how much should they get? I read the diet forums but it didn't make sense to me sorry.
Thanks

Nuts pumpkin seeds and raisins should not be fed to piggies as they are either high in fat, sugar ect. Also don't feed too much carrot as it is high in vitamin A which can cause damage to your piggies liver. Its best to only feed a small amount once or twice a week. Your piggies favourite veg makes a better type of treat. They should also be given a range of different veg and herbs each day such as sweet peppers, coriander,Celery, lettuce (not iceberg) kale, spring greens cucumber ect. To ensure their vitamin c needs are met.
Meadow/orchard hay can be fed to piggies. Alfalfa hay however is high in calcium so is not suitable of adult Guineas. :)

I'm sorry to hear your wife has had allergic problems - it makes things complicated.

I can tell you love your guinea pigs very much. It's so easy to spoil them with treats. When I 1st got my guinea pigs, I was shopping every day for different and fresh veggies. My boar developed a bladder stone and I'm pretty sure it was the food I was giving him that caused it.

Nowadays, I mostly feed the daily veg listed in this thread

https://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk...or-a-balanced-general-guinea-pig-diet.116460/

ie

1 green bean, a few slices of celery, 1 slice cucumber, 1/3 of a leaf of cabbage, 1 slice capsicum pepper, 1 sprig coriander

.... per pig morning and evening

I sometimes give a bit of carrot , baby corn , tomato - but only occasionally -as a treat.

I hope this makes things simpler for you

When you say morning and evening does that mean all together what you said. Or once what you said morning. And then all agian for the afternoon.
Should I throw the bag of nuts raisins ect outside for the birds or throw it away.
I'm so confused and don't want to hurt them because my local pet shops say other things are good like same food for ferrets. Bunnys. Ect.
And it was a guinea pig bunny bag with the nuts and ect. It was a bag of at least 20 different things.

Attachtments;

I'm buying a 2nd floor nest week. C&c.
But as far as feeding them. I think we have been killing them.
Apples ect.
I'll buy what you said. We have a lot of apples. And carrots. And brocli.
I'll throw the bag of nuts in the trash. Buying the hay you listed nest week also.
Should I stick to the pellets they have. Or buy the diet pellets from kayte?

Hi and :wel:!
I recommend selective pellets in a purple packet from pets at home. My guinea pigs love them and have a very shiny coats. They have a few handfuls in the morning and a few handfuls in the evening.
http://www.supremepetfoods.com/products/science-selective-guinea-pig/

They have chopped spring greens in the morning, a big handful and peppers, cucumbers, kale, celery whatever we have in the fridge really.

Once a week or as a treat they have fruit or a bit of carrot. They also have readigrass as a treat.
http://www.friendshipestates.co.uk/horse-feeds/readigrass.html

They have unlimited hay and I also hand feed them grass.
They also have grass when I put them in the run.

I hope this helps as I remember being really confused when I got my guinea pigs!
X:)

EDIT : Maybe try different types of hay if your wife is allergic.

You give them all of it in the morning x2 because you have 2 piggies and all of it in the afternoon x2 because you have 2 piggies!

@MooMoo&Nibbles

The way I'm doing it now is filling both bowls with pellets. Do I not fill them up all the way and should i measure it?

@MooMoo&Nibbles please relax . You are looking after your guinea pigs very well. Please don't blame yourself if their diet hasn't been ideal . If a pet shop sells things saying they are OK for guinea pigs , you can't blame yourself if these things aren't that good for them after all.

Are you happy to tell us what country you live in? We have members from all over the world and it helps with our advice.

I have never seen the brand of guinea pig food you have posted. Can you post a photo of the ingredients ?

PS - keep the snack shack - several forum members use them.

I have to keep them snak shak it's the wooden house with hay top. It's made out of ; picture ;
It's the only other house I have and I paid 30usd.

Edit; just saw your post okay, United states
I don't get more money till thursday,
so I can't buy anything for them now. I'm throwing away some stuff outside now, I just spent 100+dollars and just got them I don't want them to die. Plus my daughter loves them. Lol should I keep there bowls both filled or measure the pellets and put it in there bowls? Thanks

I would keep it. Some of the ingredients aren't ideal in large quantities but they're not going to eat enough to be unduly concerned about. I'd happily use this product for my guineas.

So i need to give them Meadow/orchard hay
And I'm throwing the other bag of nuts, seeds ect away.

Do I fill there bowls up with pellets like the earlier pictures, or measure with a cup or something. Thanks. I have carrots and apples give them carrots and apples once a week or twice? Thanks

You need to find a hay that your wife can tolerate with her allergies -that's your priority

Carrots and apple will be fine once or twice a week

Would 1 carrot a day and a little slice of apple ocne per week and a mineral wheel and salt wheel be too much?
I do have vitamin drops for water but I don't use
+orchard hay
And pellets in the bowl?

They won't need the mineral wheel or vitamin drops .

Pellets in a bowl will be fine . We'll think about quantities of pellets once you're happy with their fresh veggies.

I wouldn't give carrot daily if I were you

Are you based in the UK or the US @MooMoo&Nibbles ?

I think US from previous post.

Me too - it would be helpful to be 100% sure though

Sorry - just seen your post saying you are in the US. No point in mentioning UK sites .

I don't want you wasting money buying lots of new hay and pellets.

I would stick with the brand of pellets you are using - at least for the meantime.

Some UK hay suppliers will send out samples - I would imagine there are US hay suppliers who will do the same ?

No but thanks though I'll buy some orchard on ebay. Is ebay safe? I mean it is food. Or should I buy orchard from a website from us? Thanks

I would imagine ebay should be OK.

I buy Oxbow Orchard grass. Oxbow is an American company so you should be able to get that easily enough

I have noticed you have also posted a thread requesting a gender check . We will need to wait for a health and illness guru to answer that thread.

Is this enough pellets or too much?
Our baby has us waking up at 10pm and sleeping at 2am.
So if haven't been able to pick any veggies up as listed.
