Hello,
Cutie is on Baytrill for his post op infection. He doesn't like it very much at all and spits most of it out, the naughty boy. However, where he spits it out it has stuck like glue all around his mouth. I've tried getting it out with warm water but it's still there. I'm worried it's making it hard for him to close his mouth.
Any ideas how to get it out much welcomed!
Tia

Hi!

The baytril shouldnt have that effect on the fur- do u have a picture? Incase its scabs on the mouth i.e chelitis?

Id suggest warm water on a cloth (completely soaking) and press it on the affected area with a little pressure to release some water. Hold it there then try giving it a rub to clear.

With regards to making sure his baytril is going down, have his favourite food to hand wether it be veg or grass, syringe a little baytril into his mouth followed by quickly giving him the treat (mouth sized piece)- he should gobble it down along with the baytril! Repeat until the dose is all gone x

It's more the fur under his mouth and down his chest, I can't take a picture as it's wet at the moment so doesn't show it! It's not a scab, the only way I can explain it is like fur stuck with glue.
It's becoming an on-going battle with the syringe, he's been on them for nearly 2 weeks now so I suppose he's fed up. He will only eat from his bowl so the treat option didn't work I'm afraid! Thanks for your ideas though

Try mixing each dose with a little fruit juice- it may help! You can try a little dot of shampoo on the wet warm cloth, then repeating with just water to wash it away x

Have your tried mixing the baytril with ribena (UK)/fruit juice to cover the taste? Is your boy on his own? Normally, the companion will lick/clean any excess off. Just use warm water immediately afterwards.

Make sure that you insert the syringe well enough and that you do not give too large a dose at once (abour 1/3 of a syringe in one go), so it has got a much better chance of going down.

How is the appetite and weight?

Thank you, I will give fruit juice a try! Yes, unfortunately he's on his own as his brother died. He's just been castrated, hence his post op infection :( and is waiting to go and live with his new girlfriends!

One of my boys is on baytril and the vet suggested Apple juice so that's what I do and it works a treat I put the dose of baytril in the syringe then top up with the Apple juice and give it a shake.
