Just a question,
How do you get your guinea pigs to use a litter, or are litters just not a guinea pig thing?
I have tried using the lid of a shoebox and putting some of their waste in there but it doesn't work?
However, I hardly know anyone who's guinea pigs have a litter.
Could guinea pigs that are 1 and 1.5 learn how to use a litter?

Generally they poop wherever they are, very few people manage to get them to permanently use a tray. It can help with mess to put their food, water and hay over a litter tray as they'll by default poop there :)

My pigs have always preferred to poo and wee in a corner, so I placed a litter tray there, with some hay in it and they've used in ever since. If your pigs are opposed to lying in their own waste they may be more inclined to use it, but if they don't mind then you'll have a battle on your hands. They also prefer to have it covered so they have a bit of privacy!

Hope this helps

Could not get mine litter tray trained. I did as you did, after a cage cleanout would keep a bit of the old poop in the litter tray. They didn't seem to get it but would use the litter tray as a bed to sleep in. Which meant I had to get 2 to avoid fights as one would anxiously perch on the edge of the litter tray while the other hogged it. In the end I gave up & discovered the 2 litter trays made great walk-in hay trays. I can see though why my Peanut Butter would be untrainable. He does not even stop to poop. He'll waddle from one end of the cage to the other dropping a few as he goes.

I "litter-ally" (bad joke, sorry) have a litter tray lined with newspaper and filled with hay which they tend to use for most of their poopings. They still poo all over the place...but the most part is in the tray :)

Thanks for your replies, I will try once more. My guinea pigs have the same characteristics as some of yours in the sense that (from Lilly) the will waddle around and 'drop a few' at the same time, although the advice has helped!

Thanks so much! :) :) :)

mine have a litter tray i think they use is because when it comes to clean out it looks very well used. But they also use the corner in the corridor. Snug. And where the little house is.

Mine wee on newspaper so I use that and hay in two large litter trays for them and change it regularly. Their hidy boxes are in their trays too.

I would try the power of prayer.... :)) The day one of ours decides to poo in one spot, I will go to work in a mini dress and high heels...

Thanks guys, will keep trying!
However I'm considering getting another food bowl, because when I give them their breakfast, they'll eat it, then sit in the bowl and poo/wee in it, so everyday I have to wash it :/
:)

I accidently kind of litter trained my boys! They have a hay hut (c&c loft) area which I had to cover over one day as I had a leak threatening to drip onto them (it never did - yet!) and as if by magic they started to use it more often so it ended up being a bit of a litter tray - they still do the toilet elsewhere in the cage but have their favourite spots to pee in which I reinforce with newspaper (I use puppy pads) for ease of spot cleaning. I think it is very dependent on the piggies though. Good luck with your mission! :)
