I went out to my hutches a few minutes ago to find one that had ants crawling all over it. I have never had this problem before and I have no idea how to get rid of them safely. Does anyone have any suggestions? :)

Ants hate peppermint - maybe try a line of peppermint essence around the cages to keep them away?

we use a petfriendly ant spray.

I had an infestation of ants a couple of years ago and I got this stuff which I cant remember the name of (useful yeah I know!) but it was a gel and it came in a small round plastic see through container. How it worked was: you place it near to where you see the ants and they are attracted to it, it then sticks to them and they bring it back to their nest where it kills the queen ant and the others, thus getting rid of the problem at it`s source. It worked for me perfectly. Just be careful to read instructions as I don`t know if it could harm other animals (cats or dogs say). I think I got it in homebase in the garden section.

Lavenderjade are you talking about Nippon? I believe it can harm other animals, I will have to do a little research. :)

EDIT: Quickly did a little research and yes it is harmful to over animals. :(

Abnoba I have had a quick look at the product and apparently it can have effects on humans. If it can cause a human problems surely it will cause smaller animals problems. ? :)

I got a better idea, clean out their cage, and spray it with cage and hutch, made by johnsons, even vets can recommend it (research on the net :))

and find the ants nest and drown then in boiling water then put ant powder on the nest (providing the nest isn't near the cage of course!)

This could do the trick O0

I was planning to clean the hutch. O0 Another problem is the ants nest is next door, I really need something to discourage them rather then kill them. The dog is also another issue. :-\ :)

it says on the product that it isnt harmful to animals as such. the only thing you have to keep it away from is foodbowls, food preparation areas, etc. so it should be fine to spray the outside of the hutch and the surrounding floor area.

Bummer! Yeah clean the hutch, and spray it with gage and hutch, this kills spiders ants insects. And try boiling water on the nest then, they might died from that ;) A good litre of boiling hot water out the kettle. Always worth a try O0 I don't know what else to suggest! There must be SOMETHING out there

Thank you for all the suggestions so far. :)

I got it from morrissons for like 3 pound? I think? might have been less.

That's alright then, I will try and get some tomorrow. Thank you. :)

Any other suggestions would be much appreciated. O0

I think that was it-Nippon. Shame about that as it was good, glad you checked first though O0

We had it a couple of years ago before we had the dog so could put it down safely but with having the dog now we have to be very careful. :)

For the nest instead of ant powder buy some bait boxs they are a lot safer. I used them with great success in the house I had whopping flying ants nest at the back of my gas fire. I could not use powder because the back boiler lights to heat water the house would of gone up. I would whole heartly recomend the boxs cost about £5 from diy stores or Klenneez or betterwhere catalogs. Wilco do one too :)

We have tried them before with some succes but not much, might try them again, they weren't. The problem is I have no access to the nest. :-\ :)

Put them near the legs on your hutches or can you see any trail of ants. I also had good results with ordinary talkcum power dust some along the joining fence wall. Citroneller is good so I have heard its herble ;)
