How To Give Avipro Plus When On Antibiotics

I would recommend to get in as much as possible to get/keep the guts going and to stabilise them. It is currently more important to get a solid amount of food into Caramel; the appetite will come automatically once he is better in himself. 40ml is about a keep alive amount for 24 hours, 60-90ml in a day is what you are aiming for once the acute crisis is over. As you are dealing with a piggy with diarrhea, I would stay off any fresh food for 48 hours after the poos have firmed up again; fibre is what he needs. then you can start with little treats of fresh herb etc. and take it from there. As his guts are currently unbalanced, he may also like to nibble on some very rough, low nutritional fibre like some brown cardboard to help get them back on track.

You just gently vibrate the tooth brush over the belly and sides; he will tell you whether he likes it or not.

It is always scarier if you are dealing with a sick piggy after you have just lost one, but chances are good that you can get Caramel through this one. ;)

I would not yet offer grass until the poos have firmed up. Your specific priority is to get the guts stable first and foremost and only then the appetite back. ;)

His poops have been dry today, small black ones, quite hard. Should I still wait 48 hours before offering fresh food & grass? Sorry to be such an idiot:doh:. He is enjoying the cardboard, and had a few pellets by himself a short while ago :yahoo:

I would wait until tomorrow with grass and veg, but make sure that he is getting as much water as possible, as the poo sound a bit dehydrated. You could offer a little bit of fresh herbs if you wish to, like about a sprig or just a very little bit of grass and see how that is going down.

it looks like you are getting past the immediate crisis.

Caramel is eating veg fairly well now, still a little fussy, but not too bad. He is eating a little hay and a few pellets, but not as much as usual, probably as I am still feeding 3ml cc 2/3 hourly? He is drinking some water from bottle, but I have also been syringe feeding that, during cc sessions. His poops are starting to look more normal, returning to brown and a bit bigger than they were yesterday, there also seems to be a lot of them.
Should I stop or cut down on the cc now? Would be good to return to my bedroom tonight, for a good nights sleep
He still seems quite bloated at times, and enjoys the messaging/vibrating tooth brush. Is there anything I can give him that would help? rather than upset his stomach. He is still taking the Emeprid 3 times a day, and Metacam once a day.He seems much better now :luv:

Good news indeed! The Critical Care is now filtering through. I would recommend to continue but to switch to 3-4 larger feeds in over the course of the day - about 15-30 ml in one go, as much as he will take. That will free you up for some much needed sleep as he is out of acute danger. You can find the relevant detailed tips in our hand feeding guide under "recovery". ;)

You can either try woodwards gripe water or dentinox colic drops (a gel) to help break up the gas; they are both available either at a pharmacy or in the baby section of a supermarket like Sainsbury's. I would not start veg in any quantities until that issue has been solved. The digestive system can stay on the iffy side for a while if there has been a major slow down/partial gut stasis. if there are persistent problems, please see your vet. Severe bloat can kill, so you need to act fast if the appetite goes off again.
@helen105281 can help you with the doses.

I have only used the Gripe water myself, I tend to give 3ml every few hours. They usually like it as it is dill flavoured. Glad he is improving.

Thank you both :) I will get some gripe water tomorrow to try out. He is improving with every minute now. Travelling between the hay, pellets and water, and playful too. :tu:

I have used both gripe water and dentinox gel (actviated dimeticone) myself, but things will hopefully OK again in a day or two and you can carefully switch over to a normal diet. Just keep a close eye on any potential bloating issues.

Glad to hear Caramel is improving now after all your hard work and care. He is lucky to have you and all the care you have given him.

Just something I've has success with that might appeal to yours: give Baytril & immediately put strong/bitter herbs just to/on his lis. He's not initially keen but, after the first bite, he'll eat the remaining basil leaf then wolf down a bit of parsley and thyme. Seems to cleanse his palate & he's eating/drinking like normal. After an hour, we swap to pro-C probiotic dissolved in water (green water as we call it) which both he & his brother love. Good luck xx

Hi, thanks. Caramel was taken off baytril about 5 days ago. But good to know/try in future.

There's not much change in Caramel, is that normal? He is still only eating a little pellets/hay, and still fussy with veg (although he is eating), his poops are very small dark and dry. He is drinking plenty.
I have been giving around 40/50ml of cc, as didn't want to overdo it and put him off eating by himself. I am still giving the cc in small doses, of around 5ml as struggle with more :(.
Have vets appointment on weds, but thought there would be more change my now. He doesn't seem to be in any pain when weeing/poops anymore.
Is there a good/tasty hay you could recommend to encourage him to eat more, I tried the dandelion and marigold herbage, but he wasnt interested. Also what is fibreplex, and would that be any good to him. (Sorry so many questions).
He is enjoying grass, but I don't want to give him too much, and make him more gassy. Advice appreciated. :)

Yes definitely if his poos are funny. Is he on Avipro too?

Poos are small and dark, and not as many as should be. Yes he started on avipro plus just over a week ago, when he started baytril. (he came off the baytril last tues, as was not eating anything then. Can i get fibreplex from pet shops? or only online?

You would be able to get it from your vets but not any shops that I know of. If giving Fibreplex I would give less Avipro.

Caramel has been on the Emeprid for a week now. He is drinking an extreme amount, eating lots of pellets and pooping loads and loads, I have never seen anything like it. Is this normal for the emeprid, and after recovering from hardly eating last week? He has done a couple of squeaks whilst weeing, so I am still considering the possibility of cystitis, so the drinking could be more a sign of this. Also one of his wee's was slightly orange/pink? so not sure if it was a little bloody. He is due at vets on fri now, just not sure if this is normal behavior after recovery. He also seems slightly hyper, would the probiotic do this, seeing as he drunk so much water with it in?

Emeprid will move everything along quickly in his gut so this will explain why he is eating so many pellets and poohing lots, as it will speed everything up.

If his urine is orange, it could be blood in his urine which may be a sign his bladder is inflamed and so may have cystitis.

While ever he is drinking lots it will help flush his bladder so will help the cystitis. It is unlikely the Probiotic would make him hyper.

I am sure when the vet examines him on Friday, he will be able to see if he is still tender in that area, do a dipstick to check for blood and listen to his gut to check motility.
