How to keep Warm? Please Help!

Hi guys!
It's begining to get really cold here. I'm worried about my guinea pigs's health. The reason is because our guinea pig room is not heated. I don't want to get anything exspensive because I have a budget for my guinea pigs. Do any of you have any nonexspensive ideas?

Hm just an idea but you could try a hot water bottle but make it with not boiling water? You could also put a lot more hay in the cage or boy a short stranded bedding hay as I know some people use this as a sort of insulation. Also do you use fleece? You could put old jumpers and such into the cage so that they can cuddle into them? Hope this helps

I wouldn't use a hot water bottle just in case your piggies decide to take a bite out of it and it leaks hot water over them. Try Snugglesafes instead. They heat up in the microwave in around 5 minutes and slowly release heat over 10 hours. Lots and more lots of hay for your piggies to snuggle into or you could fill a cardboard box with hay and cut a door into it. Fleece tunnels always go down well. You could buy a cheep fleece hat if you are on a budget or buy snuggle sacks.

If you can, please order a couple of microwaveable pads. @Claire W has just sniffed out some cheaper ones last week; she may be able to give you the link.

Please make sure that the temperature in the room is not falling below 15 C.

A big walk in lidded cardboard box well filled (but not stuffed absolutely solid so they can't get in) with soft hay is also a good way to have a nicely insulated refuge.

This might be weird and not work, but, my lizard has this heating mat for over the winter. It just plugs into the wall and you put the mat under the tank, the heat comes through and he spends almost 24/7 on the area that’s warm. I have never tried it on piggies before because it doesn’t get cold enough where I am.

I'm also planning to get a small heater too. I'm just worried that my guinea pigs will freeze before I get the heater. Also, do you recommend heaters?

It has snowed where I am in Michigan. Temperature dropped pretty quickly here. I am also in US.

You might want to put them on the main floor, inside the house where the heater is working until you find a solution.

Hiya.... you've had great advice from the people above . From what you have said, your piggies are indoor piggies so they are protected from wind and rain . Like Wiebke says , it is advisable they are in an environment where the temperature doesn't drop below 15 degrees centigrade - do you think your room temperature gets below 15 ? If you can keep the room temperature above 15, you should be able to manage if you can provide an area with plenty of hay ( e.g. - a box , as Wiebke has suggested) .

If you want to get an electric heater - I would advise an oil filled radiator . You could have this quite close to your hutch/cage - but not close enough that there is any way your guineas could be in contact with the electrics . My guineas are in a shed and I use an oil filled radiator which is attached to a thermostat .

Our indoor piggie room stays about 19 through 23. I'm just afraid of the very cold days. Thanks for the ideas!

My piggies are also indoors staying on the main floor where it is always 21 C or 70 F.

However, I still do worry they will be cold so I provide them with many warm cozies, stuffed toys, and endless hay.
Not too long ago, I purchased some noodle beds for them, thinking that will solve the problem. .

I have a snuggle safe and I have never seen my girls use it so I snook into the shed and was pleased to find Rose sprawled on it! We had some nose strokes and I left!
