Hi!

I am considering to make a second floor in my CC cage, however - I am uncertain on what material to use (what is light enough), what could be the maximum angle, and how my guinea pigs would be able to get a good enough grip to climb it.

Any experiences on how to make the bridge?

And generally speaking - do your guinea pigs use the second floor? Or would they prefer a larger first floor instead?

Looking forward to hear your suggestions :)

If you have the option to extend the cage on the ground level, then that is better than adding a second level. As ground roaming creatures, they prefer and benefit more from having a larger than required flat area to live in. They aren’t natural climbers and adding a second level does not count towards the cage size. However, many piggies do use their loft areas happily.
I put a second level into the shed playpen for my boys. They used it for all of a week or so and then didn’t go up there again so I took it down.

To encourage them to use a ramp it has to be shallow and have sides on it to make them feel secure. I’ll add in a link below

Perfect, thanks for the link, and the comments ;)

Our ramp is made from bent C&C grids and some Correx, we then drape a bath mat over the top, they love their loft we have hay up there and a fleece forest! They also love to sit under the ramp hiding in the over hang of the bath mat!

All three of my C&C cages have loft areas but i bought them complete with the ramps. I have put some rubber matting on the ramps to make them easier to climb (cut up a rubber doormat). We partly cover the lofts with fleece so the piggies feel safer and just fill them with hay (there is hay downstairs too). They are all well used by all our piggies.
