TheWillowPigs
Junior Guinea Pig
Hey guys,
So my guinea pig Poppy is showing signs of a fungal infection. As soon as we noticed it, we made her a vet appointment (this afternoon at 3:30pm) with our local cavvy savvy vet.
I have no doubts that we will be able to get it sorted, though I know it can be a pain to do.
The thing is, we had this same problem this very time last year (with a different pig who has since passed away from cancer in her lymph nodes) who Poppy was NEVER in the cage with. Harley passed away before we even got Poppy.
When Harley got it, we cleaned the whole cage with the anti-fungal F10 (I think its called) and we got rid of all wooden houses. We did everything and rapidly got it under control and it didn't spread to her cagemates.
Now Poppy has a fungal infection exactly a year later.
Could it be the house? Like... winter with damp conditions but the heating on, providing conditions for fungal growth? We live in a student house in an old Victorian-era terraced house.
I don't want this to keep happening every winter. Any ideas of how to make the environment less suitable for these fungal infections?
We keep the cage clean, they live in a big cage (5 of them in a 2x8) so there is little chance its over-crowding.
Could it be the recent change in diet? We swapped them to grain free pellets. Could it be that the diet change has stressed Poppy a bit and allowed this to grow?
I'm feeling like a terrible piggy mum right now. I try to do everything right and I have no idea how this could have happened.
Once we get it under control and get her healed up, I don't ever want it to happen again. What can I do?
My pigs are my life, I adore them.
I can't help but feel like I have done something wrong... Even though I have done my best to do everything right.
