How do people store their hay? Is there a wrong way to do it?

I've just had 15 kg of hay delivered in a large cardboard box. I plan to store this in the garage, but I'm worried that mice, squirrels or rats (we have all of them!) will get into it.

I have a few unused wheelie bins and would like to make a "hay bin" that I can decant into my indoor stash. Will this be okay in a garage, or will the hay spoil in a plastic container in a garage/shed?

The important bit is that it doesn’t get damp.
A wheelie bin is fine provided it doesn’t sweat in there (would be more of a risk in summer).

When I had my hay in boxes, it just stayed in the boxes in the piggy shed (where the piggies live) and it never got damp.
I now buy by the bale and store it in a hay bale bag in the shed with no issues

I store my hay in the garage (where the piggies live) in a hay bale bag from Amazon. It keeps lovely and dry and the bag is breathable. We have had a problem with mice in the garage and there have been no issues with them getting in or holes from tiny teeth.

I use a plastic dog food bin and a small wheelie bin to store different hay - it keeps it just fine and all the dust falls to the bottom !
Because I don’t have a lot of free space in my shed it’s so easy to move them about !
I don’t find the hay ‘sweats’ in the bins

My hay lives in the rabbit shed in cardboard boxes (timothyhay.co.uk) or plastic bags (open) ings hay (from hayandstraw.co.uk).

Never had a problem with mice or with damp.
