Lacey lou has a patch of fungal skin infection on her nose. It's not bad and has been there a couple of months and not got any bigger. It's not bothering her at all and doesn't look sore, just a bit crusty.

Do I need to treat it? If so what can I treat it with?

Thanks :)

my piggies had the same & the vets gave me " surolan" ear drops treatment. apply 2times a day & it cleared up within a week or 2!. * can get it off internet somewhere. :)

I advise you go to a cavy savvy vet and see what they recommend. They will be able to recommend a suitable treatment. I wouldn't ever suggest home-treatments, especially with this being so close to the mouth nose and eyes.

Hope that helps,

Amanda

Hi, here is a link to the shampoo I have used succesfully to treat my Rose's bald patch, which i believe was ringworm. I have used on both guinea's with no ill effects, I will probably not be to popular for this post, but it is freely available to buy in Austraila, they do say on the info cat and dog, but the bottle does say animal treatment, but you cant see it unless close up to bottle, anyway here is the link and they do ship worldwide.http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dermcare-Malaseb-Medicated-Shampoo-Dogs-250ml-/180864776051?pt=AU_Pet_Supplies&hash=item2a1c617773

Malaseb is a prescription only product here in England.

I just thought about that, and then customs, although I was trying to be helpful, and actually I would like to remove the thread for that reason, I wouldnt want to get anyone in trouble, and as I said it is quite commonly available here! Does anyone know how I can remove my post?

Thanks everyone :)
I rang the lady from the rescue who does my piggies health checks and she suggested Daktarin cream. Has anyone else used this?
x

I believe quite a lot of people use Daktarin but I think it does not necessarily treat all the strains of fungi (Amanda will hopefully confirm! ) So it might work but it might not. I got Surolan ointment from the vet and it cleared up the patch on my piggy very quickly and is easier to apply than cream (I think).
Also worth getting F10 disinfectant to clean the cages to try to get rid of the fungal spores and wash all fleecy things at a high temp.

Is it the scary nasty all evil fungal infection or is it teddy nose?

My guinea pigs (2 of them) get a while strip above their noses that gets flaky and sore, they have had it since they were babies and when its gets too bad baephar fungal liquid sorts it out in 2 weeks no problem. I am at work so I cant link photos but it might be worth looking into teddy nose, which is fungal but it is harmless.

Thanks everyone :)

any of the athletes foot creams work well, apply twice daily for around a fortnight, also imaverol dip is really good.

That sounds like what she has. If I post a picture do you think you might be able to tell if it's the same thing? x

I treated them with spray for 2 or so weeks and found an improvement so carried on without a vet visit, one pig now has nothing and the other has a very faint stripe!

the only thign with the spray is that its hard to spray well away from the eyes, with a wriggly piggy and the spray nozzle blocks up too,

good luck!
