hi everyone slightly worried about the amount of weight my girls have gained, i got them at 8 weeks old middle of jan they where tiny, day1 285g & 283g i weighd them evryday for a week to make sure they gained weight which they did day8 324g & 314g carry on weighing each week and they gained weight slowly but nicely heres a few of them day23 404g & 375g day37 527g & 518g day48 600g & 586g day59 629g & 645 and then today i just weighd them day 65 and i feel they have put on soo much in 6 days 714g and 735g ? they where put with dug my male 3 weeks after his castraction but he had an absess and shew no signs of wanting to mate i no that i cannot be sure, vets sed a week after op he could join the girls but i read lots on here and alot of people said 3 weeks? i am really quite worried as these girls are still very young Thank You x

Oh dear, it may be worth keeping an eye on them. If my memory serves me right, males can produce for 5-6 weeks after their operation so it’s best to wait 6 weeks.

It’s odd that the vet suggested 3 weeks, it only takes seconds for them to mate. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you, how long has it been?

they have been with him for 4 weeks now, i have tryed having a good feel but i cant feel anything atm hopefully its not that as they r still so young, i feel terrible! does it seem to u like a huge weight gain? i have had a few pregnant females in my life time but they came to me already pregnant and dont remember doing the weighing ect this was years ago! and always had males nuterd! ive tryed readyong about weight gain in early pregnancy ect but i cant find much as evryone says something differant! just seems a huge gain to me ☹️ they are fed on excel atm have timothy hay and have there fresh veggies mornings and eves and have run time daily so surly cant just be from the food? such a worry x

u cant see the weight gain shape either as they r just little fluffy wigs with hair alover the place but they are getting very round but i no that can just be there shape anyway x

My vet said 6 week for a Neutered boars sperm to die without any worries.

Yes, I'm not sure where you have read 3 weeks but it won't be on this forum. Here we recommend 6 weeks to be 100% certain that he cannot create babies. We have even had a member of staff have a surprise baby after a female she adopted had previously been put with a supposedly safe 5 week post neuter boar

No one can say for certainty with weight gain alone but as he would still be fertile at 3 weeks post op there is a high chance they could be pregnant. Sorry for your predicament, I wish vets gave more accurate advice! Hope everything is alright!

I'm so angry with myself, he was so down after his op and his absess and vets asured me a few times as we had to back several times it was fine! my own fault i guess! all i can do is keep weighing them and just see i guess! ill read up more on foods ect and just treat them as they are until i no x

Don’t blame yourself, we all rely on the experts in times like these and we have no reason to believe that they’re wrong. Vets have said dubious things to me in the past too through lack of knowledge/experience so I’ve been through 5 now. I know how hard it is to find a piggy savvy out there.

Fingers crossed for you all! X

Absolutely agree with this. When I was adopting Donald I asked if he was 6 weeks post neuter and the rescue said no but he would be fine as their vets said he would be safe after 4 weeks. It wasn't my first experience of neutered boars so luckily I knew they were wrong and refused to take him til he was 6 weeks

i do tho i should have read more! i keep thinking they cant be but they really could be i guess, ive had baby piggies few times before like i said and they are so enjoyable and amazing but i made the choice to have dug done because of the health risks and the stress and worry of it all and then finding any baby boys new homes and now I'm going to be so worried for weeks until i no! when should i be able to tell for sure would you think anyone please?

Have you noticed any of them drinking much more water and eating loads more? I dont know at what stage of pregnancy this happens, but it is a sign

my 3 piggies dont drink much atal, dug did when he was alone but since all 3 have been togther they dont really drink much atal! they do come out now when i feed them when before they used to wait til i had gone out the room but i just put that down to getting used to me and becoming more friendly and learning off dug hes super friendly! they are always munching on there hay! but they could only be 4 weeks at the most anyway and I'm sure its about 9 weeks isnt it there pregnancys?

I'm not actually sure because i have only ever had one sow ( one of my.current pigs) . Have you read through the guides on the forum?

I’m so sorry you were misinformed by the vet. Unfortunately there’s quite a bit of lack of information in general around.

Try not to worry and just read through the guides on pregnant piggies. Fingers crossed they’re not but expect the worst, and hope for the best.

Have you separated them from Bud yet, or has he reached 6 weeks post neuter now? They should be ok side by side - they can interact through the bars

yes ladies i have read threw them, thank you and its been 7 weeks now since his op so they are all still together, itis such a worry, spec as id hate to have to seperate them from dug now he adores his girls and they are all soo soo happy xx

ive had both the girls out again this morn on my lap seperatly and had a real good feel and i cant feel anything but Marlene didnt want me feeling her tummy atal and tryed to nip me a few times, i couldnt of been more gental so i wasnt hurting her! ill just feed them well keep a eye keep weighing and just wait i guess x

hi ladies, my friend came over this morning and held all the piggies and i didnt even say anything to her about tjere weight gain 1st thing she said was she couldnt believe how chunky they where, she had a good feel of Mable and she said she feels very very lumpy and when she held her up and i supportd her bottom the weight did drop if that makes sense? and then with Marlene she has just bittem me whilst trying to have a feel she does not want to be touchd around her stomac or back end atal, face ears ect fine as soon as you try she starts to teeth chatter and trys to bite! i called vets and they said they couldnt be pregnant as he has been nuterd 🙄 and advisted me to take them in to be checkd over, like i said before they have been with dug 36 days now so surly as the vets are clearly not to great with piggies would they even be able to tell anyway? its £27.50 per piggie? should i just wait? Thanks again ladies xx

If you want to be sure whether they are pregnant then a vet check is best.
Young sows do gain quite a bit of size and weight as they develop from babies, and it depends on their diet if they are overweight. If they are pregnant then please do not keep feeling their bellies or poking around. They have already told you to stop (by nipping you). Either wait and see what transpires or please leave abdominal examination for a qualified vet.

I'm another one that says try not to be too hard on yourself. Trusting the advice of an expert is not a foolish or negligent thing to do!

If you have doubts its always worth seeing the vet BUT in this particular circumstance I, personally, would be looking for someone with more GP experience. It does sound like you've been misinformed on at least one point (time past neuter for a boar to still be fertile) and it would make me wary that their knowledge on GPs in general isn't that strong. Have you looked on the board's Vet Locator to see if there's a recommended vet near you that you could get to? That said, everything I've read says that short of an X-Ray at 7 weeks or so (or more) it will be hard for a vet to confirm or deny a pregnancy so I'd probably err towards assuming they are and get planning accordingly.

I'm so sorry you've found yourself in this situation.

(you might want to ask to have your thread moved onto the pregnancy board and then keep this same thread running until you either know you're girls are just growing up or you have babies - it makes it much easier for the pregnancy experts to keep on top of things, and if everything is in one thread it saves having to ask you the same questions over and over again :) )

i wont be having a feel again but in all honesty ive felt them 2ce in a week! i dont drive and have young children so its not that easy for me to go travling to another vets bit i will defo have a look around see of there is any kind of close to me! its just all so worrying going out of my mind not knowing

Time will tell for sure whether the girls are hiding any little secrets.

yes indeed it will, ive only had them 2months so I'm still getting them used to us ect which means ill just have to let them be for abit until we know then start again, i will be handling them when its floor time ect and ill still weight them and have the odd cuddles just not as much as we wood! and ill stop the younger 2 kiddies holding them to there in my eldest daughters bedroom so we can keep as close eye :)

other thing thats on my mind is that ive now had them 70 days where they where from was absoutly digusitng and i cant believe myself she would have takin the males out straight away? but i dnt know? they where tiny and have doubled in size since being here, the last few days they have been hiding alot more and the last week is when ive noticed a huge weight gain? i no how visable they are at the end which makes me think not but they where TINY so with them bein so small maybe ther not showin as much a larger girls? there nipples are larger than dugs but they would be i guess with them being female? i woodnt even attempt to feel there pelvic bones? they are def pear shaped slightly with firm lumpy tummys! i think I'm just driving myself mad worryin exploring all possible answers?
