humping and neutering

Big Red is constantly violating The Colonel and we're having to clip out lumps of 'boar glue' 3 or 4 times a day. The Colonel is a short haired piglet and at the rate Big Red is going he'll be bald by Christmas!

Now, Big Red is the dominant one of the two (something that The Colonel is happy with) and I don't want to mess around with that but I do want to stop the constant 'boar loving' (or at least the evidence of that!).

If I have Big Red neutered will that upset the pack order? If not, when can I get him done? He's about 12 weeks old now and weighs 650g.
 
I'm sorry I can't help as I'm not very familiar with neutering piggies. Hope someone can help you.
 
How old are they? Mine have always stopped on their own after a while.
 
They're both 13 weeks old and are (apparantly) brothers. We've had The Colonel for 6 weeks and Big Red for 5.
 
Yes, as far as I am aware a boar needs to be at least six months old and in good health to have him neutered. It is an expensive procedure and obviously with a general anaesthetic carries a risk with a guinea pig.
I have had three boars neutered over the years ... all has gone well and they have lived happily with sows after their operations.

You might find that things settle down after a while with your boars, but occasionally boars did begin to fall out and fight when they reach puberty.
 
As goldie has said they should settle down in a time. Some boars have a high sex drive and the other one in the cage has to deal with that, plus as you have said its to do with dominance.

I have two boars and they are constatly mounting but lucky enough never any boar juice, i think they do get a bit fustrated every so often, hehe.

Neutering will not change the situation a neutered boar will still hump. Its sounds like puberty in your boars and then working out whos top pig.
 
The humpings not an issue, The Colonel isn't bothered by it so I'm not fussed if it carries on - the problem is the evidence that's left behind and the fact we're slipping out clumps of his hair several times a day!

Poor little man wouldn't suit the bald look!
 
Ok gross as this may sound, don't cut the hair loosen the offending substance with olive oil and then rinse
 
Hi, my boys went through this stage too! poor duke was always getting humped by archie.. I don't agree with having boars neutered unless its really neccessary or for a medical reason as your putting a pig through an op he doesnt really need, some people may disagree with me here but i would never put my pigs through an op unless they needed it.

They should settle down give it a few months.. :)
