Hello all,
I hope your all friendly (unlike other forums).
So i had a C&C cage. With fleece bedding and it was a 3x2.It was in my room and the pigs would keep me awake at night. So my mum asked me to put them out side. I agreed because it is quite warm at the moment. They have a TINY hutch outside.Does anyone have any good hutch ideas.Like a plan?So my grandad or step-dad can copy them and build it.Because i don't want to buy a hutch because they are expensive.Thank-you.Sorry for the long post.

And of course piggy kisses from Spice and Honey

Hi Katie!

Can't help much with the hutch ideas as mine are in cages indoors but there's plenty of people here who have all sorts of hutches and they're all really friendly too!

Welcome to the forum :)

I haven't been on other forums so I can't compare but from my experiences everyone on here just wants what is best for guineas and have been really helpful with me so far!

What is you hutch like? Is it the basic hutch on legs? If it is could you not perhaps build down or build up? I've seen some like that in p@h.

You can buy hutch plans on ebay for a few quid - not sure what they are like though :-\

I would go for something simple in shape - makes it easier to clean out if there are no edges etc.
Sloping roof is good so the rain runs off.
Two openng doors - one solid wood - one welded mesh.
Use proper locks - not the twisty things that lots of pet shop hutches have.
Make sure its deep enough - I'd say at least 2foot deep and at least four foot wide - the more the better!
Also have it slightly raised off the ground to prevent damp - either on legs, or put ontop of something to raise it up.

i know Niki makes a good she has pmed me some pictures and they are amazing, also she will give you advice about them! They are made not bought

A good place to look for a hutch/run is ebay, you can often buy them cheaper there than you can make one

you could look on ebay for a 2nd hand hutch, there are some good bargains to be had. i got the pets at home lavender lodge with a hutch hugger for £50 it was only 6 mths old,but there are plenty cheaper than that.

Hi Katie
I've just converted our outside hutch to include a built on run, I'll send some pictures tomorrow to give you an idea of what it looks like. It cost me £40, but I bought too much wood and decided to use weldmesh (which is more expensive £22). If you like what you see I'll give to some idea of what to get and how much if you like.
Regards
Craig

Hi Katie,

This is an indoor hutch but you could copy the "design" and adapt it for outside Each level is 4ft long, 21" deep, 18" high

These are some of my outdoor hutches, these are 5ft long, 22" deep, 20" high, each has a "loft" inside (which is really a shelf :))

The top one is all one the others are now separated in the middle with mesh because my piggies decided they didn't want to live together anymore ::)

Hi Jane, I just finished making it (you can see the left over wood in the background). The lid is on hinges and can be lifted out of the way so we can join the pigs.

:o that's amazing

dkcrooby awsome set up. What type of mesh did you use for your run and where did you etc. it etc. Thanks.

Hi Caviesgalore,

Got all the materials from B&Q in the garden section. It's welded mesh, a bit expensive but won't rust. The wood is preserved so can be used outside...pigs can't chew it because wiring is on the inside preventing gnawing.

You can get similar mesh at Wilkinsons called Cage Mesh & i think it's £3.99 a roll :)

Thanks guys. I need to get a few new runs this year but a) all the readymade ones in my local shops are SO expensive and b) they aren't really big enough!

I would love to put my 6 girls in one run together (currently 2 groups of 3) but the alpha sow in each group can be a real so and so, therefore thought a large run with lots of hidey places etc. might help. Also got 2 pairs of bonded boys and would like to try them together during floor time (if I'm brave enough). They have a divider down the middle of a large run and seem to be fine with a pair in each half, just got to go for it and remove the divide!
