Hi,
You have all been wonderfully supportive so far with or piggies and I have another question. They are inside in a C&C but with warmer weather approaching we are looking at hutches. (I’ve posted before about keeping them outside and know about how to keep them safe, warm, cool etc) My husband wants to get a second hand hutch, I would prefer a new one for 2 reasons:
A) Good quality second hand hutches are hard to find.
B) I am concerned we would be at risk of contracting ring worm or anything else from a previously used hutch.
Any thoughts about whether it’s unwise to go down the second hand route appreciated.
Thanks a lot!

i agree with you.
I see very little point in buying a second hand hutch if you have the financial ability to buy a good quality new one. You’ll know it’s secure and clean. You’ll also have the ability for a refund should a new one happen to have a leaky roof for example. A second hand one may not come with thermal and water proof covers which means you’ve then got to try to find the corresponding ones separately (which isn’t always easy)

Guinea pigs can be expensive animals - they really are not as cheap and easy as people think.
And as above - you must always get two guinea pigs, they are social animals and never be kept alone, you must have a pair

I would strongly advise against buying any of the outdoor hutches in that review. They are clearly all much too small and offer no protection from the elements. They are all well below the minimum size, and have clearly been listed becasue the owner of the site gets money when you buy via the direct link.

If you let us know what country you are based in and the rough area and if your guinea pigs will live inside or out then we can offer more specific guidance.

:agr: with everything above. If you think hutches are expensive then you’ve not yet hear about the vet fees that some piggies can run up when they’re ill.

I’m afraid they’re not as cheap as they’re made out to be. Depending on where you are - if you can access rescues then that’s the beat way, rather than ‘buying’ them (notice I say them not it 😉).

Lastly, you have to want the guinea pigs as well. Unfortunately people have gotten pets for their children who have ended up losing interest. So get them for you and he can enjoy them as well - and they can be both yours and his.

If (as said above) you let us know which country you’re in, perhaps we could help you find a suitably sized hutch.

Those cages in that website are small. I have the double floor hutch and I had to make it bigger by attaching C&C at the bottom. I did it and my piggies roam free in our living most of the day.

I keep my guinea pigs outside during the summer, but when it's not too hot outside or raining

Hello there! I am the owner of two Abyssinian guinea pigs. Two little girls! I would like to say that last summer and also this year I’m keeping my rodents outdoors. My dad made a cage for them without a floor, if you can say so. They are running on the grass almost every time and eat there some grass and some flowers if they find them. We also give them regular food, but they like to eat grass they find themselves.
