I was invited by someone from the school today to come over to a Lady's house who would possible be able to supply me with wood shavings and hay/straw,
Well i went there and there where rabbits everywhere, she was a breeder, she dragged up this bag of what could only be described as saw dust, i said i felt it was to dusty for the guineas and she said "no guineas don't dig it will be fine" i said "well actually mine do" she didn't believe me, first strike!

Well i let that comment o and we started talking about animals in general, and she said she used to breed guineas and she thought that they were the most shallowest animal she had ever come across and dirty! she also said that they only want to know you when you have food, WELLLLL i said she should come to my house and meet my herd as they always want to know with or without food and the reasons hers probable didn't want to know her was because she was making them have babies every five Min's just to get some money, animals know i sure they do.

that didn't go down well and a very uncomfortable silence followed, ten she piped up tat she didn't believe me that the guineas wanted to know me without food,
she then went on to say, that if when she has people that come t look at her rabbits and she doesn't like them she tells them to get a guinea because they are so shallow and only care if they have food,

Why o why do people say these horrid things,

needless to say i left very quickly,

won't be going back

This is rabbit people for you I‘m afraid. ::) Totally different to guinea pig people. You don't want to know what goes on in that world. :tickedoff: Shallow. ;D ;D ;D

Rabbit world? Why is it different to piggie world? We had a rabbit who didn't make it to 2 years even but was adorable and very affectionate, I adored her. I also adore the guineas (they are more timid but as a prey creature you would expect that). Tell us more . . .

Meant to say, what a horrid horrid woman, no wonder you were so cross piggybaker. She doesn't have a clue. She isn't interested enough in them to get to know them is she?

Are you being serious? I have both.

The main goal for rabbit show breeders are to produce the perfect rabbit(s). Like you know piggybaker they keep a fair few rabbits for starters, which they don't care about at all, once they get to retirement age they will get shot of them. Funny I should say shot. ::) Seriously some will not even think or try to rehome the rabbit, just get rid. Crufts is competitive enough but rabbit showing is ten times worst. Rabbits are over bred, not really over bred but bred more then what they should be. The litters are culled, the breeders keeping the best looking rabbit(s) from the litter. However, as we all know you can’t tell how a baby is going to turn out, colour, type and overall condition changes. Meaning if a rabbit shows potential for the show ring at three weeks of age then by six weeks it doesn’t look like it has kept that potential, it will be gotten rid of. ::) They will buy a rabbit just to use it for a couple of litters, then get rid. They will try to treat ill or injured rabbits by themselves and will not take it to the vets no matter what, they would rather the rabbit die. They use the cheapest bedding, food, equipment and whatever they need around. This is just a taster and you don’t even want to know how they cull the litters. :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff:

She also said that she had caught ring worm from her guineas, that why they where such vermin, but i thought ring worm was brought on by a guinea being a bit run down and not the right diet, causing the dormant mite to spark off and go to town,

I really didn't like the women, i asked if she had a giant rabbit, she said yes but didn't wnt to show me as she was to busy,

I'm glad to hear you were talking about breeders here CC or you would have had a very angry girl here! I am a ''rabbit person'' i adore them and they are my favourite animal, i have 22 rabbits! As you have probably seen me around and read my posts you can see i'm no different to you....just because i'm a rabbit person, BUT as i said good job you weren't talking about owners ;)

Shouldn't made my post clearer, I was talking about breeders. ;) 22 rabbits :o, how come so many? ? If you don't mind me asking. :)

surely you were talking about 'some ' breeders? how can anyone justify lumping 'all' breeders together? ? :-\

That woman does sound horrid and just ill-educated about her guineas! And i am a rabbit person too i have 28 lol, well i have some and my boyfriend has some, people knew i liked to rabbits and when they couldn't care for them gave them to me! But what you say about rabbit breeders isn't true in all cases, i don't know many breeders but the ones i know will only cull rabbits that are babies that are going to die anyway, not ones that don't meet their criteria, i would hate to know a breeder like that. The ones i know sell their not show ones as pets, and they do refuse people who they don't think will look after them properly.

hm. My piggies only pay attention to me if I rustle with a bag, or open the fridge door, so I suppose mine actually DO only care if I have food... does that make me a bad owner now? ?

lol i started off with 1..as every little girl does, when i was 11. She was a lovely lop eared rabbit called Halo. I gave her to a friend to look after while i was away and when i came back i was told she got into the cage with my friends un-neutered male, so 32 days later came Welsh (who died only last month at age 8) and Angel (who died a few years ago to kidney failure). After a few months we got a Dutch rabbit from the RSPCA called Dandy (who i still have and is now 9) When we brought him home, i put him straight in with Halo and they got on great! Unfortunatley when i was that young i didn't know that you had to wait 3 weeks before putting a newly neutered male in with a female (and the RSPCA didn't say anything!), so along came Kimmie, who is now 8 and 2 brothers who went to live with a friend and i still go round and see them. Unfortunatley during that time as well Dandy got in with Welsh, so welsh had Chip and Kiwi, who i still have and they are now 8 also.

After that i got a few more RSPCA rescues Jake, Harriet and Peter. was given a stray rabbit who is called Meadow, found a rabbit dumped in an alley way called Hope. Got Bliss from a rescue farm. I got Bambi from the free ads, i got Willow, Pepper and Ayosha from a pet shop, got 3 boys Sunset, River and Rain from a women who was moving and would kill them if she didn't find them a home, and after 8 years of no baby bunnies i decided to breed Willow last year i wanted to keep all the babies so i didn't feel it was a problem so from that i got Barley, Silver, Bramble, Clover and Hazel (all females)

and that about wraps it up lol So mainly rescues a few bred accidently and purposely but i kept them all, and a few from pet shops ;D

Did you want to know it in that much detail haha

I don't think piggies are shallow. My piggies are affectionate and don't just want food from me - they love having big hugs too :smitten:

Thats awful! Thing is with "non animal people" is that they dont know enough about the animals they slag off nor do they want to inform themselves with correct information. I have kept rats for many years and if you know anything about rats you will know that they are very very tame, very very clean and probably one of the best "small" animals you can get, they can be trained, seldom bite and make very interesting pets...... yet, there is a lady who always insists that Aaron goes to her house to play cause she wont let her kids in here cause of the rats!! God knows what she thinks they will do! I also have another friend who always tell her daughter on entering our house "dont touch the dog, he will bite you" Every single time I correct her and say "The dog will not bite you, he will move away when you start to annoy him"! Nicky xx

Thats horrible, I can understand why your cross/angry I would be too!

My Guinea pigs aint shallow, they love having a cuddle and squeak at me even when i havent got food cus they want me to go and talk to them lol

If i open the cage they both sit at the door and have a nosey, and my girls all squeak when I go in they probably do want food but they also like me too, they know who I am and nosey up at me :)

I personally think guinea pigs are the perfect pet, they communicate and let you know when they are happy, friendly and certainly not shallow!

Ive had 2 rabbits in the past, both went a bit wild even though they were handled every day..

Thats poobums. my piggies love me whether I have food or not...i hope! ;D

And labradors are VERY food orientated and they are one of the most popular dog breeds, so why should that make a difference...just because an animal loves its grub, doesnt mean its not loving and affectionate! How come piggies are such brilliant mummies if they are run by food?

Sadly the majority are like this, not all but a good percentage. Which if you read my post you would see I haven't said all breeders are like this, but to make it a little bit clearer no not all breeders are like this. :)

How do they know if a baby is going to survive or not if they kill it? ?

Guinea-Tia-Flossie thanks for the explaination. ;D O0
