fudges results came back. Her kidneys are struggling, and she suspects it wont be long until they fail.

For 10 months, she has fought through a terminal illness with her heart. She has done so well for a good while, its almost felt like she was going to live a long while being happy.

Its now just a wait game, once her kidneys fail and she shows signs, i will let her go.

I feel like my hearts been ripped out all over again.

Oh no... I'm so sorry to hear this...You have given her an amazing life and any decisions you make will be the best for her.

Sending big hugs and love to you both x

So sorry to hear this.
You've given her such an amazing, loving life, she could not have wanted for anything more.
Just focus on doing what you've been doing showing her how loved she is, you've got such a close bond she'll let you know when she's ready to go.

I am so sorry! It is always so tough when you fight a long battle just for something even worse to rear its head.

Hang in there and make the remainder of her life special! As heart-breaking as it is, knowing that you are going to lose her gives you the opportunity to say and do everything you want to and to forge some very precious memories. It is always a very bitter-sweet time, but it is up to you just how much sweet you can pack into it!

At this moment, I know how you feel, as I am in the same boat. I have just got the marching orders re. my grand old lady Nerys today; it is either the adrenal gland or her kidneys, but at nearly 8 years old, I am not going to put her through a barrage of potentially inconclusive tests and a major operation that may not have not been done on guinea pigs before in this country!
Like Fudge, she is just going to live her normal life as long as she has got an appetite and a zest for life.
It would be her 7th adoption anniversay on 4th May, but I have my doubts whether she is going to make it. :(

@Adelle ; So sorry to hear the news about your little angel Fudge. Life is not fair! You have fought so long and hard for her, she does not deserve to die. I hope she has a peaceful end, with you by her side to help her over the Bridge.:bye:

@Wiebke , Very sorry about your Nerys. You have given her nearly 8 years of love and happiness. But that doesn't make it any easier to say Goodbye when the time comes. :(

I'm sorry to hear about Nerys. Its a horrific thing, knowing you are waiting for the beginning of the end and making sure you know soon enough as to not let them suffer. Fudge had a routine urine test (collected myself after a cuddle, her usual wee when back to bed so no stress) a month after a uti. The uti caused off the scale blood, protein and white cells. 10 days of antibs and the results where all normal. There was a small amount of protein in this test yesterday, so she decided to do a urine protein creatinine ration test which can determine if protein is from bladder (inflammation) or kidneys (kidney disease). I had to wait as she had to check the ratios for piggys. Normal is 0.5, failure is 2- fudges is 1.61. I'm just in shock, her urine tested normal 3 weeks ago. Shes never had bloods for her kidneys, as the heart treatment damages the kidneys and as she needed them, there was really no point as we wouldnt change anything. As much as they where suprised months ago she hadnt left us already from heart or kidney failure- I'm still shocked as shes been doing so well other than a little hair loss which looks hormonal. I will never be ready for when the day comes; i just hope she lets me know when shes had enough so she doesnt have to suffer.

Adelle I'm sorry to hear that sad news.make each day count ,piggies are better with there loving owners with a peaceful .didnified end at home if that is possible.try and not look too far ahead.love and hugs to you and beautiful fudge.x

I've been reading your thread about her from the beginning and you've given her such an amazing life. I'm very sorry. Hugs

You will know when the day has come, believe me!

You have bought Fudge a lot more time than she would have otherwise had; every month is a year in terms of piggy life! It is always a blow to the guts when you get the bad news (especially when you don't expect them), and it is never any easier and less hurtful to say goodbye irrespective of how often you have done it before, as each bond is unique. All you can learn over time is how to deal with the mechanics of grieving better and to recognise things for what they are.

You and Fudge have a very close bond because of her illness, so it is even harder to go through it. :(

Sadly, when organs start to fail in guinea pigs, they tend to do so fairly quickly. Heart and kidneys are closely related; unfortunately, there is not much you can do successfully for guinea pigs when they go into kidney failure (in fact there is very little).
You would be amazed how many vets are still of the opinion that guinea pigs don't get heart problems; I've met a few over the years! Fudge was very lucky to find you, you know!

Nerys is the last of my first generation of Tribe piggies; she has been there right from the start, so she is extra special - and she has always been a big character! Her sister Nia had to be pts two years ago because one of her kidneys had gone very mis-shapen and painful, so it is possible that there is a genetic link in the case of Nerys. :(

@Adelle I'm so deeply sorry... All you have done for her is amazing... And I'm sure she's aware of all of it... Tons of hugs to you and Fudge x

@Wiebke I'm really sorry that you're going through such a hard time aswell. Also sending lots of hugs to you and Nerys x

I'm so sorry Adelle. This is exactly what happened with Nigel, just take each day at a time and let her be your guide. You may find you have longer than you think. It is good that she has not lost weight at this stage. With heart pigs it is such a balancing act with the meds, she needs them to be able to do all things piggy but it inevitably affects the kidneys :(

Not the news we wanted to hear. Sending love to you @Adelle and wheeks to Fudge. I know that in humans with compromised kidneys, there are generally no symptoms present until the kidneys get down to around 30% function remaining. Not sure if this is the case with piggies, but it could explain why the kidney involvement seems sudden. xx

Yea its the same with piggies. She has no kidney related symptoms physically, it was picked up on a test. We arent there yet, but it is very near. She just ate all her veggies, trashed her cage and popcorned. She is truelly amazing.

Sadly kidney failure can be quite a prolonged process if they take in enough water. But they do suffer with all the toxins building up that ultimately poisons them- i wouldnt put her through that. As soon as she shows they are failing, we will make that last journey to the vet where she will stay in my arms until she drifts off to sleep.

Thanks for your thoughts xx xx

Naughty Fudge! Destroying your cage! I got home from my holiday today to find Albie and Percy snuggled up together because they had trashed their cage and tipped the other house upside down. There must be something in the air today! Definitely not there yet if she's not symptomatic then, she could continue to amaze us all yet. xx

Thanks for the messages everyone. I'm feeling a bit better tonight, no longer crying everytime i look at her! Weve had many cuddles today, i love talking to her- she never lets my finish my sentences as she smothers me with kisses!

I'm glad i came back to the forum, i dont know what i wouldve done today without all the support.

Thank you xx

So sorry to hear this news Adelle, enjoy everyday with her. I'm sure you will!

Sending gentle strokes to little Fudge.

I'm so sorry @Adelle - the good thing is that Fudge doesn't know about her results - so just enjoy what time you have left with her.

@Wiebke what a time you are having. Hugs to you and Nerys too.

Oh no :(
That's a shame- we were all hoping for bladder protein.

As the others have said- make the most of the time u have left with her.
As my post yesterday my little lady went on for months after diagnosis. But I have no idea on urine sample readings etc-few years ago now &they just did basics.
So I have no idea at what stage /reading she was on at the beginning or end.
I remember she seemed to drink loads though :(

Just remember the fiesty fudge would have lost her battle a long time ago if u hadn't have been there for her, giving her a longer happy, good quality life.
You will know when she's had enough&is too ill.

I'm glad you're feeling a little better tonight. She needs u to be strong for her.... & piggy kisses are her way of reciprocating your love for her.
Big hug for u &gentle chinny tickles for the gorgeous   :luv: Fudge
Love the girls &I. x

I am so sorry to hear this news; it such an awful blow after all you and Fudge have gone through. I was really hoping it was going to be better news.

At least she's (mis)behaving as usual :D and all those piggy kisses must be a comfort :luv:

:hug:Hugs to you and @Wiebke - it is such an awful thing to go through xx

((HUGS.)) I'm so sorry. It's always so hard knowing what the end process will be. Make all those days wonderful days for her. Some animals go through their whole lives without wonderful days like that... we can't always give them quantity, but we can give them quality. Thinking of you and Fudge!

Adelle I don't know what to say, I'm crying as I write this. Although I haven't been a follower for long. Fudge has just grabbed my heart, Fudge has been amazing, as you her mom has. Give her lots of cuddles enjoy your time left with her. Hugs from Tia & gang x
