I am known at the vets!

Hi everyone, I just had a phone call from the vets asking if I could take in a female Guinea pig. Basically a lady had two females, one passed away and she doesn't want the remaining female. The female is under 8 months so there is a possibility I could bond with my herd but I'm not sure. Space isn't an issue though.

Think about it, go and have a look at her and see what she is like. The only way to go is to not let your heart rule your head although once you see a piggy you fall in love instantly so that is really silly advice I've just given you there! Have you any other members of your family who you can discuss this with? If so do they mind adopting another piggy? And a really stupid question, I know, but are you sure she is a she and not a he?

I can’t advise you to let your head rule your heart as I have a little boar added to my herd because my heart completely overrode my head.

So the good news!- my mum is happy to have her! She will kept in her room for quarantine until she joins my herd.
The not so good news- she isn’t eating properly so the vets are checking her out before she comes to us. There could possibly be a problem with her teeth so they are looking into that now.

Just be sure that the original owner bears the cost of anything being done at the vets (or at least an assurance from the vets that vet costs and responsibility for them only run from those after the date you adopt her). Sorry to be preachy, don’t want you to end up with an extra piggy and an extra set of bills!

Thanks for everyone’s responses. The vets think she is going through acute pining . Her teeth were checked and are fine. She is on critical care at the moment as she has little motivation to eat She will be coming home to me tomorrow. As she is depressed I have had a thorough health check at the vet and have decided it is the right decision for her to waver quarantine. She will be paired with one of my pigs instead of the herd. ( possibly my mums piggie Fudge).

I am a stickler for quarantine but I think in this scenario she needs a friend. I will be pairing her with a solo pig as I don’t want to introduce with the herd just in case.

I spoke to the lady who is really upset about having to rehome but it is definitely the right decision as she was considering placing her in with the rabbits as she didn’t want another piggie. Thank goodness that hasn’t happened! She has been fed on rabbit muesli so I will be gradually changing her over to pellets. (Hopefully quickly as I am sure the nutrition content is bad ).Will keep you updated tomorrow.
