As some of you may know I was offered some piggies yesterday. I was telling a customer in work that I had been thinking about getting some for a while and she just so happened to be looking for a new home for hers. It has to be fate :)

So i went to see them today, had good 40 mins of cuddle time. I was soooo suprised at how friendly they both were, they both snuggled up and had a nap on my knee :) We realy bonded and I have fellen in love with them x)

The lady later asked when I would like to take them home and I said I didnt mind, when ever was best for her is good for me. And tada! It just so happened today was best for her.lol

So I now have two very cute little piggies in my front room. They are my first ever piggies and I would love it if you lovely people could advise me on were to go from here.

So a little info:

Names: Pete & Paul (pete is a little chunky and a little shy and paul is alot less chunky and way more sociable)
Sex: Male (twins)
Age: just over 2 years old
House: They live in a H 95 x W 50 x D 2cm play pen by pets at home and also have a Cavie 80 Guinea Pig Cage by Ferplast that they traveled in.
Food: Pets at home Nuggets
Hay: Excel
Veg:They love celery and carrot

Is all that ok? Should I leave the cage base in the pen for tonigh so the smell is familier?

I have bought them a couple of Woodlands Hay Tunnels, one of those large woolands play stick things, a toy with wood and rope and some cleaning spray. Is there anything I have missed. There sleepy bed is a plastic thing that came with the cavie cage.

I will get some piccys on soon. They were very well looked after by the lady and her husband with lots of cuddles and had the run of the house.lol.

This is all fine in the short term, but the cage does not meet RSPCA minimum sizing, so they will be needing a new one of those!

But I'm sure they will have a wonderfull life with you :)

That's so exciting! How nice that they bonded with you so quickly! Looking forward to seeing pics! :)

Thanks for that :)

I am aware of the house being to small. I bought a shed today that I am insulating and converting to a bunny/piggy hotel, Top half for my piggies and bottom half is for 2 bunnies that I am adopting from a friend. It will also have 2 individual 8ft runs to :)

Woohoo Excited! x

Welcome to the world of piggies, look forward to seeing your pics :(|)

Wonderfull, just thought i should pop it in incase! Otherwise, welcome to pete and paul!

Great news!

You may wish to get a bigger cage for the boys in the long term - the RSPCA minimum recommendation is 2x4 ft (60x120cm), but 2x5 (60x150cm) would be better. Have a look in our housing section for more ideas on grid and traditional cages.

As to what veg to feed: http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=42
A good diet should consist of up to 80% of hay; 1 cupful/ca. 50g of mixed veg per piggy per day in as many servings as you like and a 1/2-1 handful of pellets for adult piggies. Fresh water without supplements.
You may find that piggies on a limited veg diet won't quickly broaden their taste, but it would be good if you included on veg high in vitamin C every day (like a slice of pepper of any colour, a bit of broccoli or a sprig of parsley). Ideally, you make any changes gradually.

Thanks for all the advice! I really, really appreciate it.

I notice a few people have converted dog crates. I actually have a medium one that one of our dogs used until about a week ago. Its in fab condition! Do you think I should use that? It would attach to the run perfectly and I could add levels to it?

That would make there total inclosure 183 x 154cm plus what ever extra space the levels will give.

Just one thing though, how would you recommend I add the levels? lol

Thanks again.
Deb xx

Ps. I bought them some spinach, parsley, savoy cabbage, carrot, basil and parsnip. I wont be giving them all that at once though.lol. And only a little of the carrot as I read that can be bad for the liver?

I have just tried them with a little parsley as I read that was high in vit c and also some of the spinach. They loved it, Still didnt have a cuddle though as I'm waiting until my daughter goes to bed and I cant be disturbed.

Just my 2pence worth on the food mentioned, they're all good to to give but give the spinach and parsely sparingly, maybe a small amount once or twice a week as it is high in calcium. High calcium foods can lead to bladder stones. You can get some great info from the sticky threads in the food section but I find this very useful too :

I'm not sure about carrot causing liver problems but it's not massivly beneficial for teeth and its sweet. I have two pigs that won't touch it and another pair, one of which is diabetic so it's a rare treat for them.
Another good source of vit c is bell peppers too.
