Lez

just to add to my anger of the garden centre that treated shia the way they did.

i got a phone call from doncaster council today. apparently the rspca informed them of my case before i had chance.

and noone is doing anythig to the shop :tickedoff: :tickedoff: apparently the shop meets all their guidelines so they are not taking the case further. apparently theyve already had similar complaints to mine!

so i got quite angry and informed them that the animal i had bought from the shop had actually died, and they asked how it died, then said i would have to bring that up with the store owner, but they would "add the details to my case"

i am so so angry! shia died because of their blatent neglect and they can just get away with it! i just dont know what to do

:'( :'( :'( :'( >:( >:( >:(

I'm so sorry Lez. I feel that when there is money to be made the RSPCA just don't care.

You know it just makes you think what is the point in trying to save animals that need it from Pet shops because nothing gets done. It's a hard lesson to learn especially when the animals are so sick they pass over.

What about Watchdog?

It's so heartbreaking, sadly though I feel you'll just have to put it down to experience as upsetting as it is. Nobody seems to give a damn! :'(

i really am so angry and upset right now. this shop can just get away with selling sick animals to the public and noone will stop them :'( :'(

its rediculous!

it just makes you wonder what the point is in even trying

I totally understand what you are going through Lez, it does seem that red tape and beurocracy (sp?) stops things getting done and sadly when it is small animals it is often over looked. It is heart breaking and difficult but we have to hang on to the few we do save and the small changes we make happen.
Persuing the case civilly is about the only option i have been told i can take on occasion.
It does make you :tickedoff: 98) :'( when you see something wrong and no-one seems to listen or do anything about it.
Keep trying with the coucncil could you get your vet to get in touch with them? Take a more official crulety stance?
Huge hugs to you many of us here know exactly how you feel but hold on to the thoughts of the ones we do save.

i have already offered my vets assistance and details several times, and they just said, oh we'll phone you for their details if it comes to that!

they dont give a damn at all, with vet back up or not :tickedoff:

:( they sound like they couldn't care less. I don't see how the garden centre is meeting standards when they are selling sick animals who eventually die. How long was it between you getting Shia and her passing away?
If we were to be mean about it and think of the fact you're exchanging money for goods, you could say you were knowingly sold faulty goods?

we had her for just under 2 weeks

she has been in and out of the vets non stop since we got her. and i told the council that. ive already taken the goods approach too. they just care that little, they just said to call the store manager

What i want to say is unprintable >:( :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff:

RIGHT.......... i'd first go to all the local newspapers and radio stations, get people behind you, print off posters.... i'd do anything 'within the law' possible to stop these mongrels from doing this to another defenceless piggie or any other animal :'( >:( >:( >:( >:(
Do you have like current affair shows that come out and do reports on things like this ? ? ? give them a go too O0 O0 O0

i'll pm you Lez O0

Yep we do Glynis its called Watchdog. If we can get our heads together then perhaps we shouldn't let this go. It's not right!

Awww Lez I'm so sorry to hear about that...It worries me slightly because both Spooks and Moop came from Garden Centres and Spooks has a teeny tiny bald patch on the top of his head, and was only 6 weeks old in the cage by himself. Sometimes I wish that pet shops didn't sell animals and that we either got rescue ones or ones from nice breeders who's passion is animals, not profit.

So will the RSPCA do anything? Or is it a case of taking it further?

Vicky xx

the rspca cant do anything, and the council wont do anything >:(

I'm going to contact the owner of the shop, and if his response isnt satisfactory, i need to think about what to do next.

either wrte to doncaster free press, or watchdog

this is why garden cetres should stick to plants and not animals :tickedoff:

thanks for that. ill have to call the shop first, cos if i dont then i will be told i should have done, and they could claim ignorance on the whole matter >:(

The problem is if they think they are to be investigated then they will 'sort themselves out' for a few weeks, while the heat is on, they go back to how they were.

But like you say you need to inform them,to cover you back.

Horrible to mention it but have you found out about compensation?

Does anyone know where to find regulations on keeping animals (In Retail)?

the council told me to phone the shop "to get my money back" ::) thats their idea of compensation, completely ignoring vet bills, and the upset of losing a pet that should have been fit and well (not that i am doing it for the money)

i considered that they would do that too. sort themselves out, then the min everythig dies down, go back to how they were

Councils issue the pet shop licenses which have the conditions of keeping the animals laid out in there. Most are very similar, though the odd council will differ slightly. Some councils have the pet shop license conditions on their websites, and you can generally assume that it will be near enough the same across the board. Just type in "pet shop license conditions" into a search engine an you'll find it.

The main issue here as that is is illegal to sell an ill animal - though if it is the first reported offence, the council is unlikely to do anything about it as in their eyes, they need to give the benefit of doubt in case it was a one off :-\

At best, I suspect that the most likely outcome is that you will be able to claim back costs from the shop, but I can't see much else being done... the problem is, the legislation surrounding these sorts of issues is a bit pants. >:(

the legislation surrounding these sorts of issues is a bit pants. >:([/quote]

your telling me! :tickedoff: its stupid! >:(

How frustrating >:( I would certainly make an appt to see the garden centre manager and see if you can get a representative from the R.S.P.C.A to accompany you.
Take a record of Shia's ill health including any pictures and a record of the costs involved and explain to the manager direct about the unessecary suffering this poor piggy went through, he may feel guilty and reconsider selling pets. If not go to your local paper with the story and ask the paper to contact the garden centre, the R.S.P.C.A and the council for their comments.

oh no I'm so sorry :(

arghhh its so annoying how animals can eb treated like this :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff:

I they don't cover your costs it might be worth trying the small claims court.

i am so sorry that officials don't get about poor shia and what she went through :'( :'( :'( i would do what glynis said make up posters, do a letter box drop, get a petition, contact papers, current affairs, do everything that is possible to get justice done! it should matter that shia was only a guinea pig and not a million dollar race horse, every pet has feelings and rights and they should be healthy, happy and in good condition before being sold. hopefully the garden shop will give you the name of the breeder who could have been at fault too. even know we're in oz, me, OH and the girls are behind you 100%. good luck, sending hugs, prayers and good vibes :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: and the girls send you :-* :-* :-* wish we could do more and help you! :smitten:

I understand how frustrated and angry you are.
I think the most imporatant thing we can do (appart from complainging in writing to the management/HO etc) is to vote with our pockets and try and avoid where at all possible, spending your money in places that trasde in live animals. Wyvales recently made the change (appart from fish) and I am hopeful that other places will too.

i dont normally buy from petshops, i was desperate for hay the day i got her, and happened to be driving past the shop to go to my mums.

i definately could not have left her there, i know the money funds them buying in more, but the poor thing was dying and i had to give her a chance

I do understand :) I have a rabbit that came from their "adoption" centre who ended up nearly dying a few days after I got him and has cost me loads in vet bills - but no regrets! I made a big fuss about it as the way he had been "looked after" was awful and their was such a lack of knowledge. In the end they agreed to pay for some of the vets bills but mostly I hope that they took note of my comments about the lack of care. I try not to go in now as I am a sucker for a sad case ::) But you just can't save them all!

yeah I'm gonna go kick up a big fuss next week to the shop. i cant get there until i go back home, as i have a ton of uni work >:( ill prob call the store before then and speak to them

to be honest we dont care about getting costs covered, we just want them to stop selling sick and dying animals, and improve their "care" whilst instore, or lose their licece all together

baby guineas

hi i was just wondering where this baby was because i am from doncaster and went in to a petshop recently and saw 5 babys about 2 weeks old in a terrible state! they had mange and mites and were absolutely tiny me friend was happy to rehome some so i bought the two worst and i am planning on reporting them. despite all my best efforts treating them and syringe feeding them etc. The worst one died it was a little sheltie and there are currently 3 peruvians left :( :( x

Sophie, this was an old thread from a couple of years back, so it may not have been the pet shop you were in.

(By the way, I'm Sue that you met in London two weeks ago, with your Mum and Sue from Cavy Corner)
