Hey there :)
I think that a plastic box is a good idea compared to freezing to death outside. Anyway, it's got air holes in to breath, water, food and an awesomely soft flooring (my pig always snuggles up in my dressing gown, when i got a new one for christmas i gave her my old one :))
I'm 13 and my guinea pig is 5. When they get to that age they want comfort not freezing cold night.

To people saying it's a bad thing, if her guinea pigs like being in there it can't be that bad. They must have loads of room in it.

Lois :D

Thanks Lois. :(|) xx

i was just wondering when the guineas were in the cardboard boxes didnt the cat try to get them then?mallethead also it maybe a good idea has to remove the lid and put some mesh onto of it instead and bend it around the box so the cat cant get in maybe worth if you could close your door in your bedroom so the cat cant get in..
could you add a pic of the box you have with the guineas in then maybe it will put everyones minds at rest:(|)

:)) My cat is very sneaky! rolleyes When the Guinea Pigs were in the cardboard boxes, I went downstairs for a drink and when i came up to my room... omg i almost died! :{ Domino (cat) was sat next to the cardboard boxes! If i hadn't got there when i did... only God knows what could have happened! The lid is needed! He can open doors. :{ He sticks his paws under the door and pulls. I will try get a picture of the box for you. ;)

Also, the mesh is a good idea but to be honest i think it's safer with the lid. I can't explain how many holes there are, if you saw it, it's just obvious there's air! Also, i wouldn't spend £5 on a lid and have my Dad spend time drilling holes in it and then... throw it away and replace it with mesh! :) x

Worried !
If he can opend doors quote "He sticks his paws under the door and pulls."
He can easily get the lid off a plastic box with holes in it :(

I use an old dog crate when I need to put the piggies somewhere else - there's always loads on ebay or cheap on gumtree. Bit sturdier than a box and can fold flat :)

I agree that there would be too much humidity in a plastic box for guinea pigs, even if it had holes in the lid! While your pigs might not be affected by it from staying in there for a few nights, you might encounter problems in the long run. If you look on Freeads, Preloved, Gumtree or even Freegle you'll find an indoor cage or dog crate very cheaply. This would be more suitable, and you could even sell it on when you've finished with it. I also don't think the sudden climate changes (going from in a shed to in a bedroom) will do your pigs any good ?/

You can pick up indoor cages for as little as £10 if you look hard enough, in papers, free ads, ebay etc.
I just still really don't think guinea pigs living in a plastic box is good.

I don't see the point in buying one to be honest! ;) The box is as a play area more than anything. I wouldn't buy an indoor cage as play area. If i don't use the box then it's just a waste of my well worked for money! mallethead I'm only a teenager, and instead of buying something for myself, i bought something useful for my Guinea Pigs. :) There's no point buying a cage now! :{ I don't care how cheap. My parents aren't going to want to take me to collect one. They wont be happy that i spent my money and then basically chucked it away!

Its a shame that you are feeling got at when you have obviously thought things through and done the best you can.
My pigs all live indoors in cages but I still have occasional problems with condensation (caused by humidity) in their igloos or mezzanine beds.
Keep a careful eye out for any condensation and dry it up straight away, making sure their beds etc don't stay damp. Also make sure the boxes get a good airing regularly. Good luck -c

Perhaps if you're keeping them in your bedroom you can leave the lid off and shut your bedroom door behind you so your cat can't get in? :)

I keep my girls inside all the time, they have a large cage with a plastic bottom and wire top with two shelves for their beds. They eat and do their business downstairs and then sleep all together upstairs! Its great in winter because they can curl up in their blankets yet good in summer because they are indoors and the cool breeze from the air conditioner flows through their cage!

Your changing what you said. You didn't just say it would be a play area you said they would be living in it so they wouldn't be outside in the cold.
There is a big difference in pigs playing in a box for a couple of hours and pigs living in a box all day.
Maybe you should have thought it through better in the first place. There is no point buying a cage now, cos you have already spent your money on an unsuitable box.
I'm a teenager too but research things to make sure they are safe for my guinea pigs. Please don't have a go at me, i like a lot of others think what you have your pigs in is unsuitable due to humidity etc.
You clearly don't want to listen to other peoples opinions and you think you are the only correct one.
I just hope your guinea pigs don't suffer because of it.

I never said i would leave them in all day! :o I said for it would be for the cold nights. Also, i hate when people say i think i'm the correct one, when obviously you think that. mallethead I know perfectly well how to look after guinea pigs. Fudge and Rainbow are both quite old AND were bought from a pet shop! (most members say pet shop guineas die young) Also, everyone thinks they're right in saying "don't keep guinea pigs on sawdust, it's bad for them and they can die at a young age." My two have lived on it all their lives and are very healthy little girls. Not everyone on here is an expert on guinea pigs you know. ;) I did think through what i bought aswell.

you have rabbits toomallethead sorry if ive got it wrongmallethead what does your parents say about you bringing them in?/as i noticed in a picture yesterday on a thread that 1 of them was been cuddled in your house..
I was just wondering as you said your parents dont like you having the guineas in and your lucky they have let you have them stay in your room, has i know rabbits can cause more damage in the house then a guinea pig,are they ok with you having them in?/

sorry if ive got this wrongmallethead and mixed you up with someone elsemallethead:(|)

:(|) Yeah i have bunnies. 3 of them! You must have seen the picture of my little boy Jasper. He can come in, as can my other two bunnies but they have to stay in the dining room (there's no wires etc) and i have to watch him at all times! They do let me bring my guinea pigs in but only if they are in a box or pet bed. This is because last time i let them on the floor they bit through the Christmas Tree wires. :red I am lucky enough for them to let me bring them in at all since then! Also, my cat would love to eat my Guinea Pigs! :{ But he doesn't mind the bunnies, he's scared of them!

But yeah, i have bunnies, they are allowed in because they are all litter trained and much easier to catch than my Guinea Pigs if they are on the floor! These are my bunnies:

And my new little man... Jasper:

And these two are of course my little Guinea Pigs Fudge and Rainbow!

I wonder if some of this thread is getting a bit heated. There's some really good advice on here but in the end we must all decide how we look after our guinea pigs. Maybe it should be left alone now.
Fudge and Rainbow- I don't necessarily agree with your choice of overnight housing but I'm not in your house so I won't comment any further. I'd say that you should keep a careful watch on your guinea pigs, which you obviously are, and continue to read and use the forum with a positive attitude. Personally, I like to see what everyone suggests but I particularly take note of people who run rescues or have looked after guinea pigs for a number of years.
I hope nobody takes offence at my comments but the thread keeps getting bumped up and more people come into the argument taking it beyond the point of being helpful.

I've stated my opinion and thats all I'm going to say. There's no point arguing over differing opinions. I don't have an opinion over the sawdust or pet shop pigs, so there's no point in bringing that up.
I'm no expert on guinea pigs and don't expect anyone else to be but somethings are common sense.
Anyway thats all I'm saying about this issue.

Compaired to the price you will have to pay at the vets to have them treated for fungal problems ... You would have been better buying an indoor cage!

As a rescue ive had many pigs come in with fungal problems, some so bad they have been near death and touch and go for a while. £70 bill and that was cheaper because i already had some stuff he needed to be treated with.

If you care that much about your guinea's they would NOT have been outside in the FREEZING cold weather we had over christmas. Why bring them in now, when it didnt occur to you to bring them in over the EXTREMLY cold spell?

I cannot believe your trying to justify your lack of knowledge on your age. you have had them for 5 years. How long have you had the internet for? How long have you had a libary card? When a 5 year old can pick out a suitable cage for 1 Guinea pig because he has looked through books and had a good look at things with his childminder, its shocking a teenager and her two parents cannot see the issues with a plastic box.

If your Guinea was to become ill, would it be a waste of money to get them to the vet? Vet bill's for sick piggys come to alot more than an indoor cage would. Besides your comment on why bother having an indoor cage if it wont be used much, Guinea pigs fair better when inside anyway.
