Hi everyone, I'm having some trouble with my boar, Gremlin. I'm pretty sure he has I.C. and has been on cystease for just over a year. Had x-rays done last year but he had a clear bladder and just inflammation. Apart from the odd little blip over the last year he has been pretty good. Just over a week ago he started squeaking again whilst peeing and seemed to be back to where we were a year ago. I gave it a day to see how it went but decided to visit my cavy savvy vet to see about pain relief etc.
Have him on meloxaid and he hasn't improved any, intact there is now blood in his pee. I've already made the decision to have x-rays etc. done but unfortunately my cavy savvy vet is on holiday this week. Just seeking advice on wether to wait for my vet to return or get the x-ray done by someone who may not know what they're doing?

Hi!

Please get the x-rays done; ideally from two different angles if there is a stone to help locate it in the body in three dimensions. Any vet should know how to do an x-ray! A light sedation should be sufficient to allow the vet to manipulate the piggy so that the bladder area is clearly visible.

The problem with stones in boars is that they can be washed into the urethra and end up in the awkward inglenook that boars have. This can cause serious and potentially life-threatening problems.
While you can wait with a sow in a pinch (although even they can go downhill very quickly as I know from my own experiences), waiting with a boar is very dicey.

However, I sincerely hope that you have just got another cystitis flare-up. Having the x-ray done quickly can in this case ease your mind much sooner. ;)

All the best!

I would have it done asap but make sure the vet knows how to take it. Bracken had an xray supposedly of his bladder taken by a general vet last year, she took it with his leg in the way so it was useless!
