Alot of you probably will not agree with this and if you dont all i ask is that you dont critise me. I did what i thought was best in a bad bad situation.

I dont go into pet shops very often but today i went in one as i saw a cage i wanted to see how much it was (a 140). i saw the animals in there and there was one piggy. A gorgeous lil PEW female. She was lay on her side with her eyes rolling back in her head and shaking, she didnt look well at all. I asked a shop assistant to check on her and she opened the small filthy cage and grabbed the piggy who just flopped in her hand. I asked to hold her which she let me. She just looked so unwell. I checked her over and couldnt find anything obviously wrong with her. I just think hungry and thirsty probably as she was just in a small cage on her own. I put her back in the cage and she kept tilting her head as she walked and lay back down. I was mortified. I asked the shop assistant if she could get her to a vet. she said the pet shop doesnt do that due to the cost. By this point i was nearly in tears. So sorry guys but i brought her. I know I'm adding to the problem but she needed my help. I'm sure most of you would of done the same. Poor lil mite i was so upset. the pet shop didnt even ask me questions they just boxed her up and that was it.

I got her back home and had a cuddle with her. She was still flopping in my hand and had a distant look on her face. I got one of our tesco runs out and put her in. Ive gave her some critical care and also demited her (i know this may be unfair but i have to think of my other piggies). I left her in the quiet with some veg and water. When i came back in I'm pleased to say she had perked up. She had ate a good amount of the veg and was drinking when i came in.
I decided to bring Meg down my motherly piggy shes an absolute darling (Beks will know) and put her with the PEW. Meg looked after her and the piggy cuddled up to her for ages. I didnt want her being on her own all night so i introduced Squirrel and Jolene aswel (there a great group and very accepting) I'm so proud of them as they all looked after her with no nastiness at all. The piggy even gave a short popcorn. Shes such a sweetie. Feeling sorry for herself but shes doing well. She keeps shaking her head and walking with a head tilt and scratching the ear shes tilting so I'm booking her in for a vet appt asap. Her name for now is Mrs Lincoln lol. Shes had such a stressful day. I feel bad for pushing so much on her today but its paid off.
Baring in mind she was a mess this morning she looks so much better in the pics, I'm really suprised i just think she was depressed in there. Her head tilt is very worrying though. i will let you all know what the vet says.

Here she is

I appriciate not all will agree with what i have done but i couldnt leave her.

well I for one think you did the right thing. poor little girl. she is a real sweety.

well done you for getting hher out of there.

what does PEW stand for by the way?

well done for taking her in I would have done the same but i would keep an eye on her incase she has any nasties if she was living in poor conditions in the shop
would hate her to pass them onto your own

thats a good point. i was so confused and worried about her i didnt think about that. Ive just checked on them and they seem fine together. i will get checked tomorrow and fingers crossed she will be ok to stay with them x

She is lovely and I don't know if I could have left her, I had an experience last week, see thread in the Rescue section - Pet Shop.

Chez, you've done the right thing. Mrs Lincoln needs a loving mommy right now, and you'll be perfect for her. i would've done the same xxxxxxxxxx

She's stunning Chez! I agree with Graham I would have done the same too! Which is why I can't go in pet shops! I would be full to bursting! I still think of that ex breeding boar we saw in a pet shop here he was wanting our attention and we walked away! I regret that! So yep defo think you did right here especially as she is not feeling tip top.

She may have the starting of an ear infection the eyes rolling back and head tilt are classic symptoms! Mrs Lincoln is a fab name don't change it!

Fingers crossed for tomorrow! x

Oh she is gorgeous, I am keeping out of pet shops and adoption bits of p@h at the mo as I have spare cages! I would definitely have done the same. She looks exactly like Lark and Lyric the two PEW's I took to Niki on Sunday. Hope she makes out ok for you. xxxxxx

She is adorable x)

I reckon it could be ear mites in which case a couple of drops of Ivomec in each ear should do the trick, and then repeated every five days, for three sessions in total.

Will be interesting to see what the vet says. My money is on ear mites.

She's a cutie pie.

awwwwww Chez well done sweetie, of course you did the right thing i'd hate to think what would've happened if you'd not seen her :(
Healing wheeeeeeks and heaps of loves for Mrs. Lincoln (so what does Linc think of this? drool) xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>

Thanks guys. I'm really glad your aprove as i know how upset people get on here about buying piggies frm pet shops. I cant belive how well shes doing, if I'm honest i didnt think she would make it through the night from the state of her in the pet shop. Shes a fighter now!
So i can put the ear mite stuff straight in her ear?
Louise thats what i worried about. i kept walking away from her telling my oh i couldnt have her but i kept turning round and seeing her lifeless body and i decided it was commen sence to take her and do my best for her. i didnt want to regret not taking her.
Lincolns not met the Mrs Lincoln yet Glynis but i hope he will appove lol xx

Don't put the usual mite stuff in her ear - it is a different treatment you need for ear mites which it does sound like she has bless her.

You need to keep all of your girlies in quarantine now for 3 weeks to be on the safe side but the time will fly by I'm sure.

I would have probably walked away and cried as I couldn't find the space. It would have been heart breaking. You definately did the right thing if you have the money and space for another piggie! I'm sending her my love! x She is really pretty too x)

Ivomec is only available from the vets but see what they say. It might not be ear mites, but I wouldn't be surprised.

Good luck at the vets,

Charlotte x

Chez, it really doesn't worry me too much when people get cross about buying piggies from pet shops. Sometimes you just see a 'Mrs Lincoln' and know that you have to help her out. Well done you. x
I got my first two piggies from a pet shop years ago, and this fired my interest in piggies. So the pet shop, I suppose, did me a favour. I now have 6 of my own (all rescues), 2 fosters, and have successfully rehomed 11 rescue piggies. (Original 2, Nutmeg & Doughball doing well with my daughter). So if I hadn't have originally gone into the petshop, then looked on internet for info, and found that you could actually get rescue piggies....
I know there are arguments both sides, and I agree with both sides too, but don't beat yourself up, you have done probably what the vast majority of us would have done. :)
xx

well done you on getting her - he's looks lovely and I have to admit i would have done the same thing and brought her home xx

Good on you; I would have done the same - so glad that the poor mite (or is that a bad pun under the circumstances?) wasn't too far gone!

Actually, I did something similar, as I lost my heart to one little forlorn girl that was badly bullied by some older pigs. And for company, I got her a far too small bag of fur ond bones. Both were pretty traumatised. I was dismayed at the standard in the shops! That's how I ended up with guinea pigs again.

PS: Within seven weeks, I had double the number of pigs, as they'd put all guinea pigs together during the transport to the shop. All I got for my complaint was a shrug by the shop assistant!

^ some pet shop workers really shouldn't have got the job ¬_¬

it's so lovely that your rescued pig is feeling a lot better, you've obviously made such a difference to her =D you should feel very proud

Well done for getting her out of that awful situation, I would have done the same thing. If you hadn't have gone in there that day, goodness knows what would have happened to her. Just look how much happier she looks in the pictures. It was feit that you went in that day. Hope she gets well soon.:(

How is Mrs Lincoln today Chez? What did the vet say? Hope she is doing ok now. :) x

I totally agree with what you did, I have done the same thing so many times. I'm so glad she found you xx :)

She is gorgeous! No matter what happens - good or bad - she will remember her loving forever home.

I am sure there are a few more of us who would have done the same - it's the nurturing, caring, wanting-to-help-piggies instinct! x) I think whenever we see a poorly pig you just want to try and make it better & give it a good life! I think you did the right thing & I am sure that she & her new friends will agree! That's why I avoid pet shops & guinea rehoming sites (most of the time!)

Good luck with your new girl & my boys are sending manly squeaks & kisses her way!

Michele

wow I'm overwelmed by everyones comments. I'm so glad you agree i did the right thing. Shes such a special girl and i belive like said before that it was fait (dont know how you spell it) that i went in that shop and saw her as i dont normally go in them.
Shes doing fantasticly. I got up 4 times in the night to just peak my head round the corner and see what was going on. She was asleep in the girls igloo. Shes adorable. I have her out now in the run indoors and shes eating spinach with Meg. i havent seen her tilt her head or itch so far so thats a good sign but she will still be going to the vet. I havent been able to take her today unforutantly. I will take some more photos in a minute and post them. I was thinking yesturday of going down the route of complaining at the pet shop but what use will it do, i think they know what there doing it wrong, its commen sence. I just feel so relived that i bought her home i wouldnt of slept otherwise and would of felt sooo guilty.

Thanks again guys :)

Sounds like you didn't sleep anyway LOL. Up four times in the night! She is very lucky to have you. xx

She's lovely! You don't realise how small she is until you compare her to the others. Aww glad she is bucking up! She's fast becoming the star of the forum! x

thats true Louise she is sooo tiny! and when you pick her up shes just bone which is so sad for a piggy. Dont know if you can tell from the photos but she has a gaunt face bless her. Dont worry though she'll be fattened up lol shes a good lil eater aswel so I'm sure it wont take long to get her nice and healthy x
