That is wonderful, are you having him neutered? I presume they are two girls, he will hopefully love the company :)

i have two boys and two girls, i was going to try him with the boys and then the girls if they didn't get on.
 
hey! don't feel sorry. Some of us, or at least I think you did the right thing. No-one is going to stop people buying animals from a pet shop. At least you did it for the right reason. You felt sorry for it. It did'nt look cute and cuddly like the vast majority do. It would be wonderful if tomorrow everybody stopped buying guinea pigs but its not going to happen full stop.

Don't feel guilty, it sounds like he needed a home as much as any guinea pig. I bought Fudge from a pet shop and I've since rescued two more. It's a tough one but sometimes we see a piggy that we love and you can't leave him behind. I'm glad you're happy with him. Boars tend to be happier with just one other boar so perhaps you could persuade your parents he needs a baby friend all of his own, maybe for Christmas, rather than upsetting your existing twosome?

As i am sure experienced guinea owners will confirm, more than two male guinea pigs will rarely, if ever get on. When it comes to males, two is company, three is most definitely a crowd and fighting generally occurs.
If you are going to put him in with females, then you will have to have him neutered and wait, in my opinion, 3 weeks before introducing him to your girls.

my three males got on fine, i'm pursuading my mum to let me get another one for xmas and keep inside the indoor cage with cube run, just need advice on how many pigs i can keep in the indoor cage

Yes, I believe I would still walk away.

But if you still want to help the pig, in that kind of situation I think it is worth asking the pet shop to give you it for free- they probably realise it wont sell the bigger it gets, so may agree. Yes, it still frees up space, but at least they are not profiting.

See what other guinea owners advise, but I believe you will have BIG problems if you try to introduce an adult male to your two existing boars :(
Especially in the kind of cages that you seem to be considering. Even with my experience...I wouldn't even contemlplate it. But that is just my opinion. If you decide to go ahead regardlesss, be ready for conflict.

Aren't your 3 males (I know one sadly died) babies? They do usually get on, until they hit 'puberty'
 
I do hope you are going to get him neutered if you are going to introduce him to your girls, otherwise you are just contributing to the masses of unwanted baby guinea pigs. If you are putting him in with your boars, he will have to be a lot younger, or a lot older than yours to be sucessful.
 
I second wht Barbara has said. If you put a new male in with your boys you are likely to have a serious fight on your hands. Guinea pigs may be gentle with poeple but they are fierce with eachother. They have long teeth that inflict horrible puncture wounds that nearly always get infected. You could end up with large vets bills or even a dead piggie if you don't get the wounds treated. Yu were lucky if your previous three males got on. That was an exception to the general rule but you are not likely to be so lucky again.

To put him with your females you would have to neuter him. If your girls are over 7 months old getting pregnant could kill them as their pelvic bones will have fused so they can't let the babies out, so quite apart form making more piggies in a world without enough homes for the existing piggies you could lose another of your pigs.

This is another problem with buying form a petshop. A rescue would have given you good advice and made sure you went away with a piggie that would have fit into your family. A neutered ae from a rescue doesn't even cost much more than a piggie from a petshop. My neutered males are £25 compared with £19 for a petshop pig. It would then cost at least £30 for neutering to get to the same place - a pig that you can fit into your existing groups. I know how tempting those lonely piggies are, I would have loved to take them all home with me last time I went into P@H, but it would only make them ask the breeders for more :'(

yes, i am using my birthday money to get him done.

Two of my gps were babies one is an adult, does anyone know the average cost of castration?
 
rip Ernie all I want to do is say good luck with your new piggy, life is not so black and white all the time,and to me he needed rescuing, we need to respect others views here, we all have our own ideas of wrong and right and we need to respect others views even if it is not what we think, thats why this forum is so friendly and successful,and she is young owner, hope he has a very happy life and you enjoy him, just give him a kiss for me please, ;) :-*
 
My last guinea castration was £40 ish.

Ring around as prices do vary but do ask if they have a lot of experience neutering males, are they relaxed about doing so, or do they put you off. Roughly whereabouts are you, just the area, or county?
One of us may know of a guinea rescue who can reccommend a good vet to do the operation :)

I've never had a guinea pig "done" but my vet charged me £25 last year to castrate a rabbit. You need to ring local vets and get the price and the experience they have which is more important.

My vet in Nottingham charges £31. If you're interested I can give you their details, but realise its probably a bit far.
Just ring round a few vets in your area.
 
But make sure the price includes post op appointment! I had to take my gp back a couple of times but it was all included in the price!
 
The cost of £31 includes two check ups after op- one at 2-3 days, one at 10 days.
