I Didn't Know My Piggies Were Poorly When I Brought Them :(

Wow had to share :)
I watched my boys playing a long game of chase this morning they were darting about under their towel, laps of their hutch and through their tunnel etc they looked like they were having a great time. I think this may be a very good sign that they are happy and feeling much much better than they did when I first got them, I have seen them play a bit but not for as long as this.... One very happy piggy mum x

its great to see they are much better, I have had ringworm issues with my piggies and myself, i got it of piggies that i did not know had it, I was on work experience in a vets at the time, and before i noticed i had it i had passed it to my piggies, this was awful for my piggies they had to be bathed everyday, and they usually got cuddles and they couldn't, at least its curable, lice are a pain to get rid of, but again they are fine now, the pet shops breeders and rescue centres should health check the little ones before they go to their forever home, and most do, some are idiots and greedy.

I am so happy they are on the mend xx

I'm so pleased to hear they are getting better, thank God you got them, as they may have suffered in a different home :(.

Piggies can be expensive when poorly but you should be proud of yourself for nursing them back to health. More healing vibes sent x

I hope not offend but your last post regarding how many animals she has + 30 rabbbits ect I would seriously think about contacting the RSPCA as if they all or the majority of those animals have this it could be detrimental. The health and wellbeing of the animals is paramount. I know you said she loves them but these illnesses cause pain and suffering. If they all do I dread to think how they are feeling. Congrats tho on an amazing job those piggies are lucky to have such a caring mum glad to see how much better they are. Please do think about contacting the RSPCA. X

Hi @GloriousGuineaGirl
I have been thinking a lot over the last few days about contacting the RSPCA because I'm concerned about those rabbits/piggies and of the people who have homed her her animals, I saw lots of things there that showed she cares eg good food, veggies, clean cages etc but looking back now there were tale tale signs things were not right I feel so stupid for not linking these issues before I took on my boys :( two piggies in another hutch had dry patches (I'm sure these must of had what my boys have) and she said she was not rehoming them until she had got it sorted, when I fetched my boys I asked about a pregnant sow that was due anytime at my last visit I was told she had died  She said she was very upset over it but didn't say why she had passed. Also after reading a post by @Wiebke that said boars should be removed from sows at certain age, mine I'm sure we're older that what wiebke said and they were in with at 3 sows! not only has this cost me £214 in vet bills including cost of my piggies, but the Heath of my children and myself aswell because although I'm very funny about hand washing and keeping things clean etc both my girls and I have caught ringworm I'm told this would of been from the week we didn't know they were poorly as my girls have not been able to touch their piggies since the vet told us about the ringworm and she said not to let my children handle them until they were better. Luckily they only have a mid case unlike mine (photo added).
Thank you for your very kind words @LeahsPiggies and @GloriousGuineaGirl I'm glad we have our boys goodness knows what state they would of been in had we not given them a very loving home and the vet care they desperately needed. I contacted the lady today to ask if she would help with these huge vet bills I'm still waiting for a reply :(
I will be calling the RSPCA about this tomorrow

Thank you for your reply and kind words, had I been a member on here before I first viewed her piggies I would never of gone to her or I would of never gone back. I hope my boys live to a grand old age but when they pass I will be rehoming guineas via the rescue places on here if that was not possible then I'm now full of info about what to look out for. Yes I agree those that are not following health checks/home checks etc can only be classed as greedy and should be reported so the animals in their care don't suffer x

I am glad you have been those pics show how aggressive and contagious it is. You may feel like your being mean as I did but in the long run you will be helping those little ones and her. I felt like that when I had to contact them but everyone on here were very supportive and all I kept thinking was I was helping those animals that needed
The care they deserved. I admire what you're doing it is not easy x

Thank you gloriousGuineagirl and that's so true.
All this support and understanding is a great help to me and as a new piggy mum I'm learning so much from these replies and the posts I'm reading on this forum you should all be very proud of yourselves because your helping raise happy healthy piggies by offering fantastic advice whenever it's asked for.
A huge......Thank you

Off to the vets now for a weight and dosage check up....two weeks into their treatment two weeks to go :yahoo:

You are doing a wonderful job with your piggies. It is very lucky they found you.

Thank you piggyfan :) x

Just got back from the vets she said my boys are doing really well :luv: One very pleased piggy mum.
I've had my boys since the 27th may 2014 so they have been with us a month now. Their first week with us was spent with lots and lots of cuddles etc during that week it was clear from those dry patches something was not right I rang a local vets who had a small pet specialist and was given an appointment for the following week...they had been with us for one week on the day I took them and this is what they weighed:
Fudge...255g
Oreo....270g
Pippin...270g
They had didn't stop eating in that first week so I dread to think what they weighed when I brought them home from that lady :(
3 weeks on and these were today's weights:
Fudge....360g
Oreo...365g
Pippin....375g
I don't think they were as old as I thought they were when I got them I'm guessing they were born around mid April so would of been around 5 weeks old when we picked them up.
I'm guessing these weights are a little on the low side for 9week old piggies but I think it must show how poorly they have been....tagging @Wiebke for some idea what a 9 week old piggy should weigh.

Good news indeed!

Don't worry about the absolute weights so much; they are at the lower end, but they are not worringly low! Guinea pigs grow until they are 12-15 months old and can make up for lost ground until they are about 2 years old, so there is ample time to catch up! Your two boys will most likely just have a bit longer phase of quick growth, but they have a perfectly good chance of reaching their ideal adult weight and size. ;)

The crucial thing is that they grow steadily and are happy, active and well in themselves. The rest will come on its own on a good balanced diet. :)

Wow just read this thread through. I am sorry for you and your children for having to go through this. It's a shame for the guinea pigs as well having the discomfort but happy to hear they are coming through OK. You are sure learning about guinea pigs and illnesses the hard way. But on the upside you say your boys are getting used to being handled. You might want to look at Vet.UK for medication. I am not sure if I am right in saying but if your have a prescription they may be able to provide medication cheaper than through a vet. Check their website.

Hi worried val of York, thank you for reading and replying. It's been a stressful month but like you said I'm learning the hard way about keeping piggies :) I just hope the rest of their lives are happy and heathy. The support on here is amazing . Thank you for telling me about vet.uk I didn't know about that site so that's a huge help, for example if my boys ever get hay in their eyes again I'm going to go online and buy the same cream the vet gave me for fudge.
Thanks again, kell.

Hi, it seems like a year but this is week four of treatment :) I've just got back from the vets after having their tests repeated....great news no lice or fur mites :yahoo:
Fingers crossed now that the ringworm test comes back clear in 7-10 days time then I can stop all treatment and get back to normal.....I can not wait to stop spraying my boys twice a day they really don't like it.

They all had a very good health check and they are all doing great I'm told...one very proud piggy mum :)
Plus they have grown loads over the last week and piled the weight on too all around 440g now I'm sooooo happy

You should be considering how new you were to them you have done a good amazing job! It was alot to take on. Be proud how good of a piggy mum you are!
