I don’t judge someone on how they live or the way they go about caring for animals until they say they feed their guinea pigs French fries and believed one of their gps had bladder stones and never took them to the vet just because they believe their vet is overpriced. This was a comment on Facebook.. and said they don’t “go by the rules”... it’s common decency to actually care properly for an animal but maybe that’s just me.. 😕

I just want to say that, just because your guinea pig doesn’t get ill from feeding them French fries... it doesn’t make it good for them at all.

I’m setting up a savings account for my piggies or getting insurance for them soon. I couldn’t not go to the vet just because *I* think it’s too much money. I get situations change but... an animal is prone to being sick just like humans. So they come first when ill not the fact you think the vet is overpriced.. go somewhere else if possible. Save and save again.

That’s my rant.. sorry if anyone thinks I’m wrong for feeling that. But.. French fries I wouldn’t even DREAM of feeding to my Guinea pigs. Treat or not.

I have to agree.
I have 8 fur babies, 6 hamsters and 2 guinea pigs Finn and Lara. The last time when I took in one of my hamsters, Ben, to see the exotic vet, the vet told me that people rarely bring in tiny hamsters over an infected eye that people just let them lose their eye. My hamster, Ben, got treated and got to keep his eye. Ben is now 3 years old eating everything his heart desires, and busy running on his wheels every night.

The oldest hamster I had was Humphrey who recently died at 4.5 years.

Wow! 4.5! You are obviously doing something right with your babies! Great job! And french fries?! Why? Poor piggy! I agree with your rant!

I had a hamster that lived 4/5 years if I remember correctly. My sister had 2 in the time that died before he did. He was a Russian hamster. I’m glad he’s very happy!

French fries - honestly! I despair of some pet owners.
I had to leave several FB guinea pig groups voluntarily as I despaired of being one of the only voices of reason on them. Many posts were seeking endorsement of inadequate or neglectful practices and there are always plenty of “experts” who are happy to endorse or attempt to argue the point. So for my own sanity I left.

A lot of people are deliberately provocative online (and in real life!) and the best you can do is ignore them. Probably they don't even have any guinea pigs or any friends, and all the teenage girls online have sussed out they are weirdos, and they got blocked from every other social media site, so they are hanging out online pretending to be rebels with pets when they are actually sitting home alone with multiple restraining orders and an electronic police tag preventing them from doing anything else :)

French fries? Urgh, I expect the poor piggy will soon die from a heart attack :(

I too have had to leave Facebook groups. There’s far too many people asking for advise and then won’t go to the vet :( and then there’s too many people offering ridiculous advise :(

My piggies have their own bank account and I also have lovely parents who will lend me the money and let me pay them back in instalments.

I once took a gerbil to the vet as he had a uri and the vet said they rarely see hamsters and gerbils as people just take them :( Sadly we lost little Granville but I couldn’t just let him suffer with no treatment

I lost sleep over my Ben the hamster when the exotic vet hospital told me they usually closes on Thursdays, and gave me an appointment first thing on Friday morning, :xd:. So, I lost two nights of sleep.
It was Wednesday when I noticed Ben's one eye was super red, and I wanted to bring him in to see the exotic vet either Wednesday evening or Thursday morning, which Wednesday they were completely booked, and Thursday they don't even open.
I really wanted an exotic vet for my hamster not the regular kind of vet. Anyways, here is my Ben, doing well after he was taken care of by the exotic vet. :yahoo: Ben is now 3 years old, bless him.

I only ever really listen to what is said by people on here (where experienced of course) because I don’t really 100% trust the groups. I only join them for the enjoyment of piggies in general but some people... drive me wild with how they’re aware it’s bad but still do it? And then get defensive and rude at people trying to help.

This forum has really helped me 100%, without this forum I probably wouldn’t of known how to care for them correctly. From food to toys.

Keep up the good work admins and mods. ☺️

Aww Ben is so cute! I hope he stays well and healthy for as long as possible. Glad he has a caring owner like you. Because Hamsters are also very misunderstood. I couldn’t have one again but I loved mine whilst he was around. (When I was 14)

The person I talked about in the rant said that they believe that small animals don’t need vets. 😡

Well they my friend should be banned from the nhs see how they like it. Or even better pts.
They are so so thick! What makes a dog or cat better than small animals? I think rabbits are lucky because they seem to be in the three common pets that get seen as worth spending money on vet bills.

I took my old gerbil to my expert guinea, cat and rabbit vet. He seemed really surprised i had a gerbil that i wanted to get checked, but he was brilliant with her.

Rabbits are not lucky, they are one of the most neglected pets ever. Rabbits don't make any noise (apart from screams when they die) so many get ignored, starved, kept in hutches that are much too small and most vets haven't got a clue about them either. Many rabbits are dying needlessly because they aren't getting the appropriate vaccinations they need and there are still lots of vets, who have no idea that rabbits now need vaccinating against RHD2 as well as the normal RHD/Myxi vaccine. I would say guinea pigs have a far better deal, although still far from perfect, than rabbits

Yes absolutely, rabbits are one of the most neglected pets and get a very raw deal. So many get neglected as owners underestimate the amount of work they take, cost of vaccinations, the amount they eat, the amount of space they need. my rabbit run is just over 80 square feet (my local rescue centre insist on 60 square feet) but it is very difficult to buy runs of that size (luckily for me, my father has made mine) so the majority of rabbits will end up in hutches and runs which just far too small and the owners won’t be aware that they are too small because of the usual problems of pet shops selling them without proper information. The amount of runs and hutches I see in pets shops that say suitable for 2 rabbits - half of them I wouldn’t even put a hamster in!

Shocking, i was going by how many vets have pictures and info about cats rabbits and dogs. Plus rabbits you can get insured easier. And its advertised in alot if vets. Guinea pigs i have never seen a notice for insurance. I wasnt aware that alot of vets hadnt a clue about rabbits..

I see a hamster cage in a pet shop earlier, it was literally a glorified storage bin, just clearer plastic. You really do not want to see how badly animals are caged in japan

Rabbits, like guinea pigs, come under the exotic umbrella. This means that most general vets are fairly clueless about rabbits. However, like guinea pigs, they aren't really exotic enough for a lot of exotic vets. I took a clients rabbit to another vet in Northampton, because he had become poorly whilst the owner was away on holiday. I knew the rabbit had bloat, but the vet insisted it was a dental problem. Quoted £450 for the dental and said the rabbit would need to be hospitalised too, so came up with a ballpark figure of around £550. I tried to tell him it was bloat and he told me it wasn't and I was wrong. I took the rabbit away from there, contacted the owner and asked for her permission to take to Simon at Cat and Rabbit Clinic. By this point the rabbit was very poorly. Simon took one look at him, felt his tummy, said it was severe bloat and guess what? The teeth were perfect! With the right treatment, the bunny made a full recovery, but if I had taken the word of the other vet, that rabbit would've died under anaesthetic, whilst the vet was wrecking his teeth that were perfect! Scary!

Makes me very angry, i bet simon is a master a treating rabbits. He has his own i think

Reading this thread makes me realise how lucky I am with my vets. I know they do good rabbit care and they are brilliant with my piggies.
I completely agree with the comment @Posyrose made about the forum

I must say its all countries though. But lately i stumbled upon some japanese ones on google

I agree. My husband went to Spain a few years ago and there were people selling rodents and birds in the street and he said the cages they were in were horrible :(

Oh god, I just hate how animals are caged and treated in Asian Countries

I have a Japanese friend in Japan who lived many years in the UK (that is how I know her) and I know she would never mistreat animals. She is an extremely caring person. I am not contradicting or disagreeing with what you are saying but alongside those who mistreat animals there are caring animal owners in all countries.
