I keep seeing so many beautiful pigs getting sick and passing so quickly. I know that you can not control everything and that just because it has happened does not mean it will happen to one of my pigs but.... I feel like a new mom where every awful story about a baby passing is foretelling my future. We did not do our research before getting our pigs and I did not realize how prone they are to medical issues. I am so sad for everyone on here who has recently lost a pig or is battling health issues as I post this.Thinking of you all and your piggies and hoping for the best for the everyone!

Guinea pigs are exotics and quirky little souls. Some piggies, like some humans, go through life with no health problems and pass naturally at a ripe old age. Others, like humans, seem to succumb to everything going and are seldom away from the vet. Don't forget that this is a forum where people often come for advice because they have a problem. There are many piggies and owners who don't post on here about all their healthy happy piggies. Don't for the worst for your own piggies. Just be reassured that if you do need our help, advice and support we are here for you

So true! I keep trying to remind myself of that, thank you!

That is so true @VickiA! I first joined the forum in 2012 when we got stan and benson but once i was all set up, i didn't visit again til stan was really ill. had i visited at the first sign of illness, i really think he would still be here today. it's brilliant that when people do have the sense to ask for help on time, it's there in such detail.

If there's one thing stan taught me, it's that one hour of the day a pig can look really well, an hour later it could be very ill. This forum is marvellous when things are fast moving like that. Even to have the support of a like minded community when things are turning for the worst is brilliant.

no one in my real life can understand how much stan is missed but here i know that many have felt the same as me.

SOOO true tablemabel! I can just picture trying to tell "normal" people about spending money on vets and meds for "just a guinea pig". I have gotten the crazy look for putting my cat on thyroid meds. So glad to have a place where everyone really does understand and care!

i am still getting 'funny' comments on my emergency vet bill for stan. People seem to think it's funny that i had a big bill and then he died:evil:

What is wrong with people?!

I had to do a distant stare and stone face only last sunday when someone thought it funny to say "any more guinea pigs died, yet?"

Just not funny.

It amazes me, and not in a good way, how people can be so heartless when talking about animals. Disgusting.

@cassybaby89 To you I can only tell you: don't worry and live the present. Cherish every moment you have with them and just be happy with their company. It's true that they are ill really easily but in this forum there are a lot of piggies that are 6+ years! It's sad when they leave soon (it's sad always, of course) but you can't just think that, because it may happen to you or it may not. Maybe your piggy will beat the world record on the oldest piggy! :tu:

What is true and no one can deny it is the fact that piggies bring joy, happiness and love to our lives to an extent that it's nearly unbelievable. And that is why is worth every single moment with them, even it it's just a year or two. Because don't forget that you're also making them feel all that.

I've experienced the same, when my beloved Sam(RIP)was ill recently I was spending a fair bit on vet bills and I had a couple of people say why don't u just buy a new one which is a very ignorant thing to say.Sadly there's a lot of people who don't understand how much our pigs mean to us.

It just shows how nasty some people can be x

And I think the same also applies to other pets too.
I had many dogs over the years, and tended to adopt the older hounds, so lost quite a few in a short space of time.
I eventually succumbed to adopting a happy healthy 5 year old to give myself a break from the loss for a while, and she died of a heart attack aged 6.
You just don't know what road you will travel, but I still never regret taking the road in the first place.

Our boy Smudge passed away last week, we made the choice to put him to sleep as he was very poorly and was beginning to suffer, we had him for four healthy happy years and his brother is doing so well, people that are not animal or guinea pig people look at us like we are idiots for being so upset but he was a big part of our lives and its so good we have this site to come too, we got a canvas of both of them together printed and it is on our wall with pride of place!

I am so sorry to hear this! Sending you love and healing!
