Today I went to Morrisons to get some veg for the piggies and while I was browsing, I saw a young chap putting out the fresh cauliflowers. I noticed that he was pulling off loads of leaves (they looked big and juicy to me!) so I decide to be really cheeky and asked him if I could purhaps take some of the leaves.
He looked at me strangely, then said 'help yourself.' I swear I have never been so excited rumaging around a tray of unwanted leaves! rolleyes
I ended up with a bag full and skipped off down the isle. Small things and all that! :)):p

i nearly always do that i feel like a stalker sometimes :(|) i usually wander around the veg aisle until i see someone going to restock the shelves, theyre getting to know me now lol:))

hehe I get your excitement! this happened to me a few weeks ago at the supermarket, the woman even asked me what recipe i made with them! :(|)

I once walked past the kitchen of a restaurant and saw 2 women peeling loads of carrots so I went in and asked them if I could take the peelings. My children were so embarrassed they walked off and left me!

My husband did walk off pretty quickly I must admit rolleyes

I have no shame anymore! :red:(|)

I never thought about doing that!
*off to lurk in asda*

I didn't actually go with that intention! It's just, when I saw the guy throwing away perfectly edible cauli leaves, I looked at my hubby and said 'I'll be back in a minute...' It's the first time I have done it, but if I catch someone filling up with fresh produce again, I can't be held accountable for my actions! :)):))

I've just been to Tesco and because they are shut tomorrow (normally open on Sundays but they have to close on Easter Sunday) there were lots of reductions. I got some really good bargains including piggie veg. E.g. a big bag of spinach for 20p!

I spend a small fortune on veg for the piggies. They eat better than me! :)) I may have to bargain hunt more often...

Nothing makes me happier than seeing the "reduced to clear" section in the veg isle full to the brim ! it's the small things in life that keep me happy :') i don't realise how sad i am till i skip back to my trolly and say "LOOK WHAT I FOUND!" and then start showing of my little treasure i've found !

I think our Morrisons has got the gist of people asking - they shove the leaves and extras underneath and I just help myself to them so don't have any embarrassment at all :))

I do ask for the smaller boxes though, which the young shelf stackers think is hilarious :red

Hey ho, the things we do for our piggies :)

I did exactly the same last year with the sweetcorn husks....my gang adore them!

Got a few strange looks, though!

My veggie bill on a normal week (i.e. if we have no boarders in to stay) is about £20.....if we have boarders in, that rockets to about £40 a week! Eeeek! @)

I have an arrangement with my wonderul neighbours...

Every Sunday afternoon the veggie fairy visits our house and leaves a container of yummy peelings, leaves and broccoli stalks on the doorstep for my two little girls.

Hehe, what an awesome idea never thought to ask at the supermarket.

does make you wonder what they think of us strange veggie aisle lurkers who pounce on them :red:red
i have 7 African land snails 7 rabbits and 3 guineapigs, sooo i always lurkx)

At my morrisons (where I work) they occasionally put the cuttings in bags and write on there "free rabbit food" I try to snap them up.. or luckily I can ask members of staff if they can get me cuttings 8) But sadly a new supervisor has started in the produce section there now and she keeps guinea pigs too and she always snaps them up now pow-pow damm! lol

You need to go to Aldi for your veg if you dont have a greengrocer - there super 6 are great - at the moment broccoli cucumbers and a big bag of carrots are all 39p each

I have 21 little mouths to feed (plus one little foster piggy-who I'm working on to join my gang ;) ) so it does get very expensive. And that's just my piggies! :))

I always feel so healthy when I walk out of tescos with a bag full of veg and salad, me and my partner don't eat salad but only the best for my boys, I always think to myself 'wow our trolley looks so healthy' and then I pull out the chocolate treats for me hidden underneath ;)

well done for asking! they would be just thrown away!
I work in a supermarket but they dont let us take anything, they just bin it! if only you knew how much food they throw away. such a waste.
