I found My Guinea Pig Kawaii Dead yesterday Morning :(

my Guinea Pig Kawaii died yesterday morning and showed no signs of loss of appetite or motivation the night before i went to see him and he was happy as ever then in the morning I found him dead and his cagemate Babaru was cuddled up to him Babaru is now very distressed does anyone know what could have happened?

Sorry to hear about your loss! unfortunately it does sometimes happen suddenly as guineas can be so good at hiding illnesses until sometimes its too late.
How old is Babaru?
Up in Gretna we have a couple of older males available for rehome and in a week or 2 some young baby boars

Babaru is 7 months old he was born on the 20th of July 2009 by one of my sows I bought who was pregnant at the time I did not know she was pregnant and then I came in and there was 2 little Guinea pigs there a boy and a girl the girls are in a seperate cage but Babaru is really upset now he's still eating though not drinking so much

I'm so sorry for your loss. As has already been said, guinea-pigs are good at hiding illnesses. Babaru will probably be quite lonely so maybe you could get him a friend? Maybe an older male or baby male to make them more likely to get on. Or you could maybe get him neutered and move him in with your girls?

Maybe he had a heart attack? Piggies are very good at hiding their illnesses.......
Little Babaru maybe needs a friend? If you're not feeling up to at the moment you could do like i did and that was to buy a soft toy (no bits a piggie could bite off!) for him to cuddle with until you can sort out something

yes he will be lonely as he was with his mother for 3 weeks then I moved him in with Kawaii & his brother who I had to give away as he got aggressive towards Babaru but Kawaii always looked after him like he was his baby now Babaru just doesnt know what to do with himself he's by himself for the first time me and my partner are currently trying to get a house as my dad dont like my guinea pigs and wont let me get a friend for poor Babaru but as soon as we get our place we will be getting him a friend just hope he's ok for now I've looked around about neutering him but he's still quite small and the vet dont want to risk it as it may kill him.

thank you i would get him a friend but my dad wont let me get another guinea pig as we still live in his house he's a mean old grump he dont like the cute little noises they make!

I gave him lots of cuddles yesterday to calm him down as he was shaking like mad and didnt want to leave Kawaii's body he was bringing him food it was so heartbreaking to watch him try to get his companion/father figure back on his feet so I got him out of there while my boyfriend got Kawaii out and buried him in the back garden near my dog who passed away last year

and thank you I'm sure Babaru Suke KiiKii and Honey and both of us will move on and just have good memories with Kawaii

thank you most of them are Japanese Names Kawaii means Cute Suke means love or cool depends on which way you use it Babaru & KiiKii means Bubbles and Squeak and well Honey's just Honey cos i don't like it in Japanese I don't speak Japanese but I just looked up names for Guinea pigs in Japanese just to be different adn yes maybe I will get him a stuffed toy hopefully he wont eat it

It is natural that guinea pigs do mourn; I hope that Babaru will be eating and drinking again by tomorrow, although he will be still very much withdrawn for at least a few days.

If you are not allowed another guinea pig and won't be able turn your father's heart, the alternative would be to have Babaru neutered, so he can join his mum and sister again when he has sat out the post-op six weeks wait to make absolutely sure that there are no more accidents. I'm sure that Helen from Becklen can give you the name of a good and experienced vet in order to minimise the risks.

In the meantime, would it be possible if you moved Babaru close to the other piggies, so he can hear and smell them and doesn't feel so alone?

If he's eating, he'll come round! Just give him time.

No. He won't dehydrate that quickly, as he still gets some fluid from his veg. Just leave him be, he'll sort himself out! You go off appetite yourself when you are very upset, but won't get ill from a day with eating and drinking very little.

Right now, you are still in shock about Kawaii's sudden death, so it is perfectly normal to fret about Babaru.

I'd be really carefull about giving him floor time with the sows as if they happen to be in season he'll have the job done before you can grab him.

no he wants me to get rid of them all in a way think he may have killed Kawaii by shouting at him as he gets annoyed at them just for saying hello to him but he denies doing anything and yes I was really careful with them i stayed right next to them and Babaru didnt show any interest in them whatsoever but yes I know what you mean about being carefull

However, the obvious exception to this is a sudden death which gives no advance warning signs. I believe that happened in this case, most probably heart failure, less likely a stroke. In either case nothing could have been done either to prevent or to treat the condition.
It is always more unexpected in a relatively young pig.
