Helloooooo! :)p

Well, its official! I am a foster Mum in 3 days!

I'm picking up my three new charges on Monday evening! :(|)

Okay, may have thrown myself in at the deep-end here as well (Fi.Cantillion starts laughing)

I'm going to be long-term fostering 3 pregnant sows :laluot_21:

Now, my cat has given birth before so I'm okay with blood, sacs etc but is there anything I should be aware of (I know I have Fi's full support but you can never have too much advice!).

We don't know how pregnant they are but they are 12 weeks and about 3 generations inbred (to give you a little background).

Is there anything I should look out for? Anything I need to be aware of?

Any questions I should be asking but haven't ... feel free to answer them too!

I think I might be a little mad but I'm going to spend most of the weekend researching and I'm going to be speaking to my vet tomorrow morning but, as I said, all advice is appreciated :)

How exciting, good luck with them.

Wonder how many you'll end up keeping!

You sound as though you'll be well prepared too. :)

I hope so. My problem is that I (a little stupidly) read a figure somewhere where it said that every 1 in 3 piggies die from giving birth and a very similar ratio for pups dying during birth.

I am sure you will be fine, it looks like you have read up on everything you need to know, let me know how it goes.

I bet you are really excited! I would be! :):)

Look forward to hearing lots about these three and seeing photos soon!

The '1 in 3' figure is awful, I had 8 pregnant sows here recently (there's a pregnancy diary in the pregnancy section) and I had an awful time with them and did lose some. However I've also had quite a few other pregnant sows here who have given birth the healthy litters with no problems, even though some of them had a rough start in life. Unfortunately it can be heart-breaking at times, as Hels recent thread about Gypsy shows, but when it goes well the rewards are great and the little ones make it all worth while.

Read up on Peter Gurney - what to do if the piggy is in trouble in labour. Also 'sex life of guinea pigs' (also by him) is good.

All you can do is give them lots of love and good food and hope they are ok - they'll have the best chance.

Good luck

I agree with Sophiew.

Births can go extremely smoothly. My Lottie and Lola had very smooth births, all mini-pigs alive, 3 for Lottie and 4 for Lola. They were young mums but because they came to me pregnant, I had no idea regarding the dad, history, etc.

Do you know how pregnant these sows are? I left a light on at night when Lottie and Lola were nearly due as I was worried they would not be able to see what they were doing. I might be mad, but it helped me get a reasonable night's sleep when they were heavily pregnant! rolleyes:)

No idea - I saw them yesterday and I couldn't really tell a difference between them and a 12 week old guinea pig to be honest. Will get a better look at them on Monday when I pick them up but Fi (owner of the rescue) said she didn't know and neither did the previous owner (hardly surprising really!)
