I'm new to all guinea pigs, so ive read up on them and decided they are what my family need. Ive got the cage and bedding and feed, i pick the GPs up later today from a farm park that really look after their animals well. The carer of the GPs knows what hes talking about luckily and has said he will give me advice leaflets too.

is there anything else i need to know about guinea pigs.?

Where to start!

You might want to leave them alone for a couple of hours to let them settle in to their new home. Don't worry if they are really skittish at first because it can take a little while before they are comfortable being picked up. You could also try handfeeding them veg goodies as this can help build up trust between you and the guin.

If you have children I would be wary of leaving them alone if holding the guinea pig. They are very fragile little creatures and there have been instances whereby they have got hurt.

i wont be letting the kids alone with them anyway,, I'm scared of them accidentally harming them,, my daughter is 5 , shes the youngest so hopefully she understands.

sooooo excited for you, we will all be here to help and advise if you need us. x

I'm more excited than the children, they are my responsibilty too,, I'm not even asking the children to help cos i know after a while the novelty wears off and they dont want to help.. so they are NOT a pet for the kids,, they are mine all mine..well thats when i get them.

ive always liked GPs but didnt know enough about them,, ive scaled the internet for info and read books,, and with help from this site I'm sure its all gonna be ok..

I CANT WAIT :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

My cousin bought her GP 2 years ago for her 6 year old and he now wants a hamster! She loves him and I think all along she new he was going to be her pet. He isn't getting a hamster though!

The pets we have at home are mine and my daughters, i knew the novelty would wear off for them , but I have no problem looking after them cause I wanted them more than they did, they tell everyone which pet is theirs, but I'm their mummy really , as i do all the work.

I bought my daughter a hamster 2 weeks ago, I asked her whilst in the shop if she wanted one, of course she said yes, It's for me really. Ha Ha

well ive got them,,gorgeous chocolate brown in colour,, ones got a orange flash between her shoulders. I'm letting them settle in before i take pics. we have named them Coco & Chanel...

Love the names...posh piggies eh? Congratulations on your new arrivals and its great that you researched info about them first.
When I got my first piggie, I took him from an owner who was neglecting him terribly and I didnt even know what they looked like! I was amazed how big he was.
Thank goodness I found this forum and there is loads of info on the net.
I reccommend that you source a good vet with experience in guinea pigs before you ever need one. It is shocking how many vets dont have a clue and can mis diagnose a guinea, so find a vet by asking them if they are experienced, how many guineas they have treated etc. If you let us know what area you live in, someone on here can probably reccommend a vet or rodentologist ;)

forgot to say that they are 4 weeks old,, i thought that was a little young to take away from mother..??

That is a little young to be sold on, but boars need to be taken from mum at 3 weeks I believe as they can get her pregnant. Are yours boars or sows? It may be worth while you checking the sexes for sure if you got them from a pet shop as they quite commonly mis sex guineas and if you have a boy and a girl that would be a disaster. Dont mean to scare you, but do check to be sure! I believe there is a good section with photos on guinealynx.com?

they are both sows, the breeder re-checked again whilst i was there. they had about 7 sows and about 12 boars, plus adult piggies

Congratulations on the new piggies O0 look forward to seeing you around the forum

Aww, congratulations! I am so happy for you.

Don't expect too much from them too soon. Just be gentle, kind and patient and they will grow to love you! Four weeks is a little early to be sold on. Be sure to watch them carefully, make sure they are peeing, pooing, drinking and eating ok. Initially, be careful not to feed them too much new food - introduce small pieces of different things very gradually and check they don't have runny pellets.

I'm sure you know all about general care, etc, but if you have any specific questions, ask away.

I always like to weigh my pigs each week as they grow and record how they are doing, but they neeed to settle in for a few days first!

But MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL is that you take lots of photos and post them on here so we can share in your joy! (kidding, but it would be nice to see them!). Enjoy!

i would also advise you to find a vet who has experience with guinea pigs, i assumed (when i got my piggies) vets knew about all animals, but they don't, theres alot to know about guinea pigs.
