I was giving Roger his "bits " checkup, and there was an awful lot of boar glue collecting debris, including some poo that seemed stuck. I cleaned it out, but there still seemed like there was quite a lot of glue still in there. How much is normal?

Hiya

I think you may be misunderstanding what boar glue is. It's part of the ejaculate and dries very hard if 'deposited' in the coat or bedding. Occasionally it will remain within the penile sheath and cause a problem (search - strangulated willy/penis plug/sperm rod).

There are other substances which can cause debris to build up - smegma (eeeewwww), creamy white build up around the shaft of the penis, can cause problems when urinating and infections can take hold under it. A wash with warm water to remove it - preferably with a little hibiscrub to sanitise the skin. Boars who have a frequent build up can be generally unwell and have stopped grooming themselves, be over-weight and unable to groom themselves or have a bacterial/fungal infection causing the over production of secretions.

Impaction - a build up of faeces in the anal pouch, see link http://www.guinealynx.info/impaction.html. The lining secretion of the anal pouch is also creamy white and stinky - this is normal and should not be removed unless it is excessive or has other debris adhered to it.

I'd never heard of boar glue before coming on this forum. My boar has something on his fur but it's more on his lower back, it's like he's put too much hair gel in and it's dried in a clump. What could that be?

That's probably his grease gland, if black and gluey/oiley. The remedy is to keep it clean reguarly. Swafega or fairly liquid are both fairly gentle. If not cleaned it can be a site of mite infestation, so best to make sure it's attended to. One of mine has an active one, and one not much of a problem. The skin underneath may be black or pink, but will be bald.

So would I just rub a little neat fairy liquid onto the spot then sponge off with warm water?

Yes although if the build up is quite bad, I would rub it with your finger during lap time and see if you can get some of the build up off first (comes off as small balls of hard-ish grease). Sounds disgusting, but my boar Caractacus used to find that less stressful than having his bum washed :(|) You can also comb it (gently!) to remove some of the grease as well if a bad build up.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Suzy I think you're right ; it was a buildup of smegma that was in his bits. He is due for a bath shortly, so I will continue to monitor it and clean when I bath him. I certainly hope that it's a normal amount that he has. Will keep an eye on it :)
