Hi all,

Not been on here at all recently, as I just started a college doing a Masters. My problem is kind of related to that.

As some of you might know I have eight guinea pigs, but unintentionally, I only meant to have two orignially...

Anyway, it had been fine looking after them all untill I started college. I have been commuting, and it takes me an hour to get there and an hour to get back every day. The course is full time and pretty intense, I start at 9 and often don't finish untill 6 or 7, sometimes not untill 8. Later on next year I may have to stay until 10 and be in on weekends. I get home really late and I'm exhausted. I have been struggling to look after the pigs during the week because of this, although I still make time for them in the mornings and when I get home.

I have realised I can't cope with commuting anymore, so I am planning to move into a student house in Cardiff, but there is no way I can take eight guinea pigs with me, and no one at home can look after them.

I guess I just need some advice really on what to do. Has anyone been in a similar situation? I really don't want to rehome them, but I think I might have to. I don't know if student houses allow pets. I have a couple of freinds who might takes some of them on. Its just a really hard descision to make :(

sorry about the essay... its a rather long-winded situation!

Well if you cant take them and no one at home can care for them then theres no other option than rehoming them? Try a rescue centre ir ask on here as we are all piggy lovers. Otherwise why not ask about fostering? See if anyone can foster than for you where you can visit when your home and take them back with you when your course ends x

Some bed sits do allow animals but probably not eight. I know students with hamsters and even cats. Are they indoors or outdoors a bed sit landlord is more likely to be ok with them outdoors. A non student rented house is more likely to allow animals, do you have any friends you could house share with?

You are right. That is a horrible decision to have to make. I struggled the first few weeks of working full time with caring for my four. Luckily my family really stepped up and now my younger brothers change the food and water, my Mum does midday veggies and they all do a midweek clean out then I do the weekend cleanouts.

I really think fostering them might be the best bet. Or even rehoming some of them and getting regular updates from their new owner.

I'm so sorry for you. I cannot imagine not having my babies.

I'm sorry you have such a tough decision.

I would ask your landlord if you can have some of the piggies with you. If they say you can then you can still keep some of the piggies.

I'd definitely ask around if anyone can take them first, family, friends, etc.

Good luck.

Thanks for the help everyone. I have asked a freind, and my mum might be able to cope with a few. Its really hard though, The house I'm going to has no space for animals really.

Aw, I feel for you.
Most mornings I do the piggy rounds at 4.30am before I leave for work and then again at around 5pm when I get home. I worry leaving them for so long but give them plenty of veggies, hay etc. My son gets home before me so closes the curtains and pops the lights/heating on for them, fills bottles etc.
I would suggest a rescue so they would have the best chance of new homes possible, know it's easy for me to say but peace of mind they will be cared for would be priority.
So sorry you are going through this - I live for my furries, they are my life and would be devastated if for any reason, couldn't keep them 8...
Keep us posted, sure things will turn out positively as you obviously love them very much :)

ok, so the freinds I hoped might take some probably can't. I'm at a bit of a loss now :(

Are they inside or outside guinea pigs?
Could you not look for a private rental / house share and the piggies could go outside in a shed? I can't think of many landlords that wouldn't let you keep pets outdoors... If they're indoors piggies, you could wait another few months until the weather starts to warm up. There's always a way - you just have to be determined enough. :)

Whereabouts are you? Are you looking for someone to take them on temporarily?

I'm in South Wales. The house I'm moving into will let me keep some outside, the problem is I can't look after all eight. I'm looking for someone either to foster them or to take them permanently, as I don't know what I will be doing after my masters either.
