Hey all!
I have a boar who I took to the vet recently suspecting he has fur mites. The vet didn't really do anything much other than spray him with something that seems to have helped quite a bit.
I want to be sure that whatever he has will go away for good though since I still see a few black and white specks on him so I bought some Ivermectin spot-on treatment from Beaphar. When should I apply it? A week after he was sprayed by the vet or can I do it earlier? I don't know what anti-parasite drug the spray contained although the vet said it should last for up to a month without need to re-apply and I don't want to cause any issues. I can't find much info on the spray online either. He had plenty of black specks stuck on the hairs in his rump area that you could pluck out very easily and lots of dandruff/white stuff on him and around the eyes, that's fur mites, right?
As for keeping them away (Pretty sure I got dermatitis from the little so they're:ban:) there's only one brand of hay and one brand of bedding (wood shavings) I can buy here so my options are very limited. If they are coming from these products, what can I do to make sure they are eliminated? I've read about freezing the hay but not so sure about it. I'm disinfecting his cage every time I clean it now until I'm sure they're all gone (my mum thinks they're all gonna crawl in the house and hide on anything they can climb on until critter apocalypse comes and they eat us all alive). I have bug phobia so you can imagine what that does to me.
I've found sources saying that their parasites don't affect humans except for a few cases of dermatitis and that they won't infest the house yet I've found resources that also state the opposite so for the Love of Guineas, somebody give me a definite answer.

Thanks and apologies for the long post. I don't own any piggies so dunno much about these things. :lose:

I've just found out mine has fur mites but its only one out of the three. I've ordered some shampoo, spray and spot-on treatment. I'd be interested to see what othe GP owners do to evict the little critters....

I have always used Xeno Spot On treatment at routine 4 to 6 weekly intervals. It is available in two strengths and dosage is worked out based on the weight of the guinea pig. I have also read on the forum that Invermectin via injection is effective in stubborn cases. The Xeno spot-on can be applied at shorter intervals but follow the instructions very carefully and don't overdose.

I know the dosage needed but I don't know whether I should apply it after the spray and when.

Aren't parasites just the biggest nuisance?
What they lack in size, they sure make up for in effect. :(

From what I have read the Beaphar or any shop bought product isn't the appropriate dose to treat any infestation effectively. I would ask your vet for an appropriately dosed Ivermectin product if you can. Is it definitely fur mites? can you see them?

I just gave him two pipettes of Ivernectin. He has dandruff and what looks like static lice. When I first saw those things, he had a lot of dandruff on his back and his rump area had lots of black specks glued to the hair and I could easily pluck out the strands of hair to remove them. His ears have these two. As soon as I applied Ivermectin,
they came off easily. I did not see anything running in his fur either. There are no cavy savvy vets in my town, probably in the capital if they exist.

My guinea pig is the same as TianTian. Dandruff, little black specs. "has a lot of dandruff on herback and his rump area had lots of black specks glued to the hair and I could easily pluck out the strands of hair to remove them"..

The other guinea pig seems to be grooming her where she is going bald/hair loss.

Belphar antiparasitic is on ebay for £4.60

You should probably take her to a vet who knows guinea pigs well. My country unfortunately stops at cats and dogs when it comes to animal care.....Wishing I lived in the UK right now.

I think you will need to get her checked by a vet, as the hair coming out sounds more like fungal to me and the treatment is different.

She has always had coming out ever since I adopted her... I brush her regularly as she has really thick fur. Checked the others tonight and the other is becoming bald . I'll take a photo tomorrow and post just so everyone can have a nose....

I recently changed my hay I bought from a local farmer. It's since then they have a had hairloss/barbering/baldness. I think cheap it's always best!

Hi Tian, that is very bad, what country is it that you live?

If you start your own thread when you post the photos with a full history of when the problems started etc we can go from there.

Hi Tian, that is very bad, what country is it that you live?

I'm from Cyprus and I'm feeling desperate. The boar I made the thread for isn't mine but the owner's parents told her that they don't want him anymore and has begged me to keep him.
He was sprayed at the vet's and after I administered topical Ivermectin he's looking much, much better but after reading about dosage, at 1200grams he'd need around four pipettes whereas I administered two. I simply don't know how to keep treating him because I don't want to hurt him. I looked at his paws today and they look pretty bad, like he has dermatitis or something. I can't afford to keep buying stuff blindly either....I was thinking of posting pictures and getting advice from other forum members.....

Definitely post some photos, we may even be able to suggest some things you could discuss with your vet if they are open to ideas at all.

Actually humidity is usually on the higher end of the scale here....These days it's between 65-75 although it doesn't rain at all.

Here are the photos! I trim his nails frequently; they grow fast!

It doesn't look that bad, right? The skin's rough but it doesn't seem swollen and he doesn't have Bumblefoot from the pictures of it I've seen. I also forgot to mention that he's most likely the product of incest so perhaps his body is more susceptible to infection compared to other piggies.

Hi , thay look fine to me , no sign of anything nasty at all :tu:

The feet look ok, maybe a bit of dry skin?

Is it just the feet that were the issue?

Yeah, I freaked out for nothing I guess but they do look pretty dry. Maybe soak them in some salt water? This week I'm planning to give him a dose of advantage for the lice etc to make sure they are gone. Poor thing went through a lot of stress lately.

Yes that may help or some Hibiscrub if you can get hold of it in Cyprus?

sudocreme is also quite good for dry feet, just a small amount and rub it in
