A lot of you may have followed the neutering experience of Milan and Hugo in March, when both pigs developed abscesses post op and we had the most heartbreaking journey that eventually ended up in Hugo passing away back in May.

Milan was then bonded with his beautiful wife Effie and although it still hurts to think about Hugo no longer being with us, I thought that things had at least stabilised. Unfortunately on Thursday night we felt a lump around the neutered area and my heart just sank. Friday I took him to the vets and my fears were confirmed- his abscess has returned.

I have a holiday booked next Monday to majorca for 12 days and my nan and grandad were going to care for the pigs in their house. Although they are able to provide the pigs with the basic care needs- cleaning, feeding and watering, I just knew that post op care wouldn't be possible for them, especially if Milan is not his happy self. Initially I was going to cancel the holiday but Debbie from TEAS ever so kindly said that she would look after them while I'm away and take him to Simon to be vet checked. I decided that it would be best for Simon to actually do the surgery so we have taken the pigs to Wiebke today and she is very kindly going to transport them to TEAS tomorrow so that Milan can have surgery/ the abscess drained sooner by simon.

It killed me to come home to an empty house but I know they are in the best hands and this is giving him the best chance to get rid of this nasty abscess. I miss them already and need well wishes sent to my beautiful boy!

Oh Sian, I just can't believe you are going through all of this again.
And as hard as it is Milan is in the absolute best possible place right now, and I am sure he will be very well taken care of.

Huge hugs to you and him.

The very best of luck to you, a pig free house must be terrible...
You, Millan and Effie will be in our thoughts tonight.
Wheeks, squeaks and the best of luck from me and the girls.Xx:hug:

You've done the right thing Sian . I know it's not easy for you - but he's in good hands .

He is in the best hands and i pray he is sorted soon xx

Thank you all. I'm not going to enjoy my holiday knowing my boy is poorly but I gathered that with Debbie and Simons care, he will be given the best chance anyway regardless of whether I went away. It's been a long day with 6 hours worth of driving so I'm exhausted now but decided to make a start of sorting their bedroom out. I think I'm wanting a cage design change but don't even know where to start haha

Awh I'm so sorry I have two Male Guinea Pigs who are 1 and Buddy got an abscess about 5 weeks ago. First he had it drained but a capsule formed. Another vet took it out completely but we were unaware of the huge risk in doing so. The wound that was stitched up got infected (so, so quickly) and the vets cared for him & biscuit, his friend for 2 weeks and we recently got them back this Friday. He goes back for a checkup on Wednesday but we have been tiled multiple times he may have to be put down

Good luck! As you will know, it's a horrible experience

You haven't had much luck sian, I hope everything will fine. Try not to worry, go on Holiday & switch off if you can xx

So sorry to read this, I've been following your posts for some time. Please try and enjoy your holiday as much as you can, to build up your strength so that when you come home you can be strong for any care that Milan might need. In the meantime, with Wiebke tonight, and then with Debbie and under Simon's care, he really couldn't be in better hands. Sending him my best healing thoughts, and big hugs to you. You've been through far more than any person should this year.

Hugs to you and yours @Sian25. So sorry to hear this, you really have had a terrible time with your piggies. They certainly couldn't be in better hands so try to enjoy your holiday, you deserve it.

You have done the very best thing for Milan @Sian25. He couldn't be in safer hands. Try not to worry too much and to enjoy your holiday.

Thank you to @Wiebke and @furryfriends (TEAS)
I couldn't thank them enough Vicki. If it wasn't for them I would have been back in a cave right now but although i miss them, i'm feeling a lot more optimistic and positive!

@Sian: Effie and Milan tucking into their dinner pellets at Chez Tribe tonight! I am also happy to report that Milan's half of veg has disappeared more quickly than Effie's! They are currently diving into the latest handful of fresh hay before Milan is due his meds. ;)

I hate being in a piggy-free house, too, because I am so used to all the little piggy sounds and munching noises. It is awfully quiet without them!

But you can hopefully enjoy your holiday knowing that both your delightful piggies are in the safest and most experienced hands possible!

Milan's new abscess is thankfully not large, so it is going to be a much easier and quicker procedure this time round since he will be seen by Simon as soon as possible after the bank holiday! @furryfriends (TEAS) is our Abscess Queen; she knows what to do and how to care for him best!

Aww look at them  I'm glad you think his abscess is not too big- as I've not had much experience with abscesses, I thought it felt massive. Well it was smaller when I first noticed it on Thursday but despite antibiotics, it has got bigger.

With you having so many pigs, I can imagine that your house would seem VERRRRY quiet without them haha. Your pigs are all gorgeous and so lucky! Thanks to you and Debbie again :D

Sorry to hear this and it must be really odd not having their noises around but they will be really well looked after. I'm not sure you could have done any better for them than you have.

My house feels like a mausoleum in the absence of piggies! Even my hub (who is not into guinea pigs and usually only recognises them when they are about to pass away from old age) is finding it rather creepy without piggy noises after so many years.

Hywel's big neck abscess in April was ten times bigger by the time he could be operated on after Simon's holiday! :(
As Milan has been put on zithromax, his abscess may grow a little larger, but it is in not going blow up like some of them do. By the way, Debbie agrees with my assessment, so you can hopefully sleep easier!

PS: Milan is letting you know that he doesn't think much of my hospitality, not after his hated dose of zithromax and the ruthless way he's been boarhandled! :yikes:

PS2: Milan's coat is very healthy and smooth, so no worries about dehydration or him not being well. The heft around his ribcage is also perfect. You can rest easy in that he is still a very good weight for his size. ;)

Hahahahaha I'm laughing to myself here. I forgot to warn you of his hatred for any medication other than metacam. He can be a fiesty little thing. Cutting his nails is always a bigger task than it should be as I end up feeling like I've lost my fingers with the way he bites me haha. Other than that he's an absolute sweetheart and so laid back and cuddly  so glad he's eating well and is hydrated. He was either having me on or I was being overly paranoid haha

So far, Hywel is about the only piggy that Debbie and I know that actually doesn't mind zithromax! But it has saved his life five years ago, so that may be a good reason, as he is connecting it with making him feel a lot better again.

Milan is a sweet boy, apart from medicating, which most piggies don't like. But the majority love metacam, as it contains a bit of honey. It is important that painkillers go down well!
If he starts tweaking you, force his chin up with your finger to remind him to behave himself in guinea pig terms! That should take care of that! Give him a little nuzzle around his eyes to tell him that you still love him afterwards. ;)

I have mostly stayed away from the cage on the other side of the room, so Effie has been out and about eating hay and drinking several times.

Good luck Buddy you have the gold plated care team in the absence of your own besotted & devoted slave
hopefully the abcess will be sorted & heal really quickly. Sian go enjoy your holiday as best you can. sounds like you need it.

@Wiebke have i missed something somewhere? do you have a piggyless house? where is everybody?
big thankyou to you & Debbie for sorting out this gorgeous piggy pair's sleepovers :D

fingers && paws crossed for a speedy recovery & a happy relaxing holiday

I have a houseful of piggies (as Sian can testify!), but there are times I am going on holiday, too... Especially with my family in another country! I was talking about my own experiences. ;)

I'm so sorry the abscess has returned yet again but he really is in the best hands with Debbie and Simon. Hopefully Simon can work his magic so the abscess heals once and for all.
