I rescued two guineas about a year ago and according to the previous owner they are around 4 or 5 years old. Two males and I noticed yesterday that they refused to come out of their little Hut and Sabertooth had crusty gunk on his eyes and super labored breathing. Wolverine was not eating or drinking but he would still move around and such. I put them in a smaller cage so I could bring them to my bedroom for the night. Sabertooth didn't make it and passed away in the night. And now wolverine is doing worse. I called a vet in my area but it's so expensive and I recently lost my job so I can't take him in. I'm worried about wolverine and have been giving him water mix with unflavored pedialyte in a dropper and he seemed to be doing better, but now he sounds like he's wheezing and he just wants to snuggle in his blankets. From what I can tell from online it's a range of things but I want to know if there is something I could do to help him out. Any suggestions help. Thank you in advance!

I am no expert but it sounds to me like he has a URI you need need need to get him to vets for antibiotics or it's likely he will die too. X

Could anyone lend you the money to get him to the vets? It does sound like a URI and if he doesn't get treatment then he won't make it xx

I'm so sorry that you have lost one piggy and that the other is sick.
It sounds from your very brief description like a URI or pneumonia. Either way your piggy needs urgent veterinary assessment and treatment or he will suffer and may well die as these things don't go away on their own without treatment. Please don't let him suffer - take him to a vet.

Like others have already said he really does need to be seen by a vet urgently.
Depending on where you are located you may be eligible for free vet treatment if you can not afford to pay.
If you let us know where you are based we could offer more specific advice on getting treatment for your boy.

I live in Colorado Springs Co . I'm going to try another vet office near my house and see if they can work with me.

Here is a list of groups that will help fund veterinary treatment to low wage earners or people suffering financial hardship;

Are You Having Trouble Affording Your Pet? : The Humane Society of the United States

A lot of them are for dogs and cats, but at the bottom you can search for clinics by state, and CO is listed, so hopefully you can find someone nearby who will work with you. :hug:

Please place a bowl of steaming water next to the cage to help ease the breathing and also start syringe feeding and water your remaining piggy; weigh daily at the same time to check the food intake. The need to breathe comes before the need to drink and only thirdly the need to eat. Guinea pigs can't breathe through their mouths, so it is vital to clear the airways as much possible. URI is a bacterial infection, so it is crucial to give an antibiotic as soon as possible.

Thank you all so much I found a vet that's reasonable and I'm taking him today. He survived the night, and his breathing seems better. I know that he's lost a lot of weight and I tried feeding him pellet paste but he didn't seem interested. He does drink the water pedilyte mixture. My little guy is a fighter if nothing else. I hope the vet can figure out what's wrong and get him some meds. Here's a pic of my little man.

Good luck at the vet. Hopefully they can give your some answers and medication :D

He didn't make it to the vet. We were about to leave and he died in my arms. I feel horrible that I've lost both of them. I should have just taken him yesterday even though I didn't have any money.

I am so sorry to hear! It is hard most vets will not let you come without having full payment and sometimes life work out in ways that we just don't have it. Try not to be too hard on yourself. You were on your way to get the little one there. I am sorry they were not able to hold on long enough. Sending you love!

So very sorry to hear this. Hugs, sorry for the loss of your little one x

Thank you all so much. I know that once I finish school and get my own clinic I'm going to make it easier for people to get the care they need for their pets. At least he's not suffering anymore.
