After looking long and hard for a sow for jasmine to bond with, the local rescues including the RSPCA, had nothing... I looked on the rescue web sites and most decline to offer if you have children under 6, so I went to pets at home..... yes I know..... But if I can offer a piggie a longand loveing home, surely that's not wrong?
To cut a long story short, I think PETS AT HOME have sold me a pregnant piggie!
I'm sure I feel them moving and she has put weight!
She was out the back and not on show which makes me suspicious !
What to do?? Well I will definatly keep her and all her babies! No question! Do you think it's worth exploding at p@h and asking tthem to supply food and a hutch? I got her on 11th April so working it out, she will be due soon! Do I separate her from Jasmine?

Sorry for all the questions! @)

Please start a post in the Pregnancy and Labour section for pregnancy advice, so all the relevant info for the mum and babies is together. There is no need to separate her from Jasmine as long as she is happy in her company.

You can try to get some compensation from P@H, they can only say no, but you may get somewhere with it - another cage to house the males in would be important.

when pets at home accidentally sold us a poorly pig (in the adoption centre i like to add) they refunded us all of our vets cost and the cost of an indoor cage, along as we had vet receipts. it might be worth asking but id may be harder with a pregnant pig. also depends on the manager.

It's worth a try - the date of purchase (do you still have the receipt ?) may help with proving she was pregnant and SOLD :...It is illegal for them to knowingly sell a pregnant animal but with P@H records, not surprising. The branch near to my home is actually quite good though and the animals well cared for...
More importantly, you have her now and she will be cared for properly :))
Agree it is a good idea to pop this on the pregnancy section.

Thanks guys,, :)
I will keep you all posted as to the outcome!
Depending I'm right of course, if she is pregnant then she should have had them by around 12th June, that's if she was mated quite near to when I got her.

She was out the back and not on sale! I was told that she was treated by their In house vet for an abscess ! But when I got her home I could see no evidence of one! When I went back a week later for some food the assistant asked me how she was getting on! When I asked her where the abscess was she said that it was a mistake and that was another pig....?? Seems a bit odd then that she was out the back! I smell a Rat! @)

Sorry you are all quite right! My mistake, should have posted correctly mallethead

I do have the receipt, so there is no question of the dates! It all seems too fishy to me! I'm sure they were very aware of what was going on!

Does the pets at home you got her from have a vet? the very least they can do is give her a free check up to confirm if she is pregnant.

A little of topic, but
I don't see how adopting a piggy from pets at home is a sin, although i understand how everyone wants to support rescues, at the end of the day we're here to help animals and we shouldn't let opinions on places stop us from doing that.
My boar marmite was adopted as a single boar too aggressive for any friends, he has virtually no ears left and while at pets at home adoption he had another home before me and was brought back, he's now gained alot of weight is much more friendly has a massive 120 cage and a bright future with chances of him being bonded ahead of him and also a bigger C&C cage.
Whats so wrong with that ? At the end of the day, theres nothing wrong with it, you've helped an animal thats what counts when you forget about money and opinions.

Sorry little rant there.

I have to say I agree with you. I bought 2 of my pigs from pets at home as I was unaware that there were even guinea pig rescues at the time.

My other pig is a rescue from a private pet shop he was covered in fungal infection and underweight - I know that these shops don't care for animals like we do and the more people keep on rescuing from them the less they will learn but on the other hand how ca we let them suffer.

Its one of those topics where I can completely appreciate peoples views from either side.

whether you get your pigs from a shop for whatever reason or you get them from rescue is up to the individual.

However, this is a rescue friendly forum where we dont judge but hope to educate and spread the word about rescues

Rescues are bursting at the seams with unwanted pigs (a lot being unwanted pet shop pigs), accidental pregnancies and very poorly treated piggies as well as those who sadly were greatly loved but no longer able to stay with their family.

Buying any pig from a pet shop does nothing to help rescues, it only lines the pockets of the companies that think it is acceptable to get rich off the millions of animals that they sell in their shops each year that are factory farmed to meet the demand.

I wish your new piggie all the best with the possible pregnancy

sadly, every guinea bought from a shop, frees up a space and means that the parent guineas are doomed to be bred from again to fill the empty place in the shop :(
I know it is sad to see a young piggie in a shop, but where are the mum and dad and what are their lives like?

Rant away! I understand what you are saying! Of course in an ideal world they all would be in loving life long homes. But pet stores like P@H will always sell them so I can see what you are saying! The main thing is she is very muched loved and cared for, and if we do have little additions then believe me, they will be too!

Ok ! She is booked in for 9.30 tomorrow! They have agreed to see her and check and give her an ultra sound to confirm! Well at least we will know for sure, just a bit concerned about stressing her! :{

You have to let everyone know the result, the suspense is killing me.! :D

I don't think getting piggies from pet stores is a bad thing, like said above sometimes those piggies need to be rescued also. I bought my 1st sow from a pet store, a week after getting her home it was apparent she had ringworm bad. I went back to the pet store just to let them know, I had no intentions of returning her, but the clerk told me they figured it out when the other pigs housed with her showed signs and instead of treating them, the put them all down. This made me so mad! My second was an older female who lived in the store for months, everyone wanted babies, she was used by the owners to breed babies for the store. I guess once they retired her from breeding they decided to sell her.

To tell you the truth I am about to purchase another sow, I have called rescues all around me looking for a sow to bond with my second sow with no luck for weeks now. I did manage to find two bonded boars that need a home, I am picking up on Saturday, but it still leaves Riley lonely. She deserves someone. (my fixed male and first female won't accept her)

What a sad story - your piggies are the lucky ones who had another chance x>>

Bit off topic, but how come you saw your little sow at PAH if she was out the back in the first place?

Any news from the scan?
