I have fallen in love with a guinea pig

Ok this is going to be a bit of a strange story of how I saw this guinea pig so excuse the ickyness.

Yesterday I had a tooth extraction so due to being on some legal drugs to calm me down (think I took too many) they seem to have stayed in my system till today as I have a n e e d le phobia. I thought I would be fine to go shopping, go to the bank and then go to the pet shop to pick up some things for my animals. Well anyway shopping went fine apart from feeling a little light headed. Had to go to my aunt's to drop some stuff off for her which is where I started to feel queasy and hot. Got to the bank and knew I was going to be violently ill. So legged it to the pet shop next door and literally begged the guy to let me use his toilet. Guy was so nice he showed me upstairs with no problems let me with a glass of water and went back downstairs. Well you can guess the rest with the toilet I won't go into details.

Anyway I came out and looked across the room and that is when I saw the most gorgeous little piggie I ever did see. He is so close in colour to vikkixgrissomxgizmo's grissom and I am so in love but my mum said that I shouldn't really buy him as I was not in the right state of mind. My boyfriend thinks I shouldn't have another one as I already have 3 and 1 hamster and a cat. But this little guy is so amazing I feel I have to have him. Please can someone help me decide as I admit having 3 is a bit pricey for me but I have wanted one like Grissom for so long.

Any comments are welcome and any questions of course.

I think fate led you to him, of course you should have him!

I've bought two piggies on impulse as well . . . we have 5 now. One was the sister of one we intended to buy but we didn't know she existed (she was always hiding) and we didn't want to separate them . . .. the other was a little ginger teddy who was alone in the petshop for days and I couldn't bear thinking about her all alone!

If you don't mind me asking etc how old are you? It all depends on if you can afford another piggy and if you have the time and the space to look after and care for another one without neglecting the pets you already have. If you can answer yes to these questions then I would advise you to go for it. If you can answer no to any of these questions then I would advise against it. Keep us posted on what you decide O0
 
Can I play devils advocate... if you say 3 are a bit pricey it is a good idea to get another?
If they all needed veterinarey trettment could you afford it?
We all see that next piggy, most of us get them (including myself no-one is infallable) but be sure it is the right decision for you and the guinea pig.

if you think you can afford another - and to be honest it's not a lot more in terms of hay/food/bedding, but it is in terms of vet treatment!!! then if you want to...!
 
i would say if your mum and BF are against it they must have their reasons. talk to them about it, weigh the pros and cons and then make a decision. would also offer the poor guy something for his loo and for his kindness. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: if you work put some money away for if the need arises you need to go to the vet. if you get pocket money do the same. must warn you though that most piggies from petshops are usually ill. so talk to mum and BF and weigh up the pros and cons and go from there. good luck O0
 
Well I caved and I have brought the guinea pig who I called Trouble (as I got into shed loads of it when I brought him home).The good news is he seems perfectly healthy and he has already met 1 of my guinea pigs. The bad news is he is TINY.Herbie is like 6 times as big and I have a horrid feeling that he is only a couple of weeks old. The lady in the shop said that she thought he was 3 months old but she wasn;t sure. That is such a load of bull poo I really don't believe he is as when I had Pip and Squeak at 6 weeks old they were twice the size of this little guy.

He is a lot more lively today and he seems to feel safe with herbie even if Herbie is rumbling a bit at him but not loads just an occasional one. He has also smelt Trouble's bum and given him a couple of licks and they seem to be chatting to each other and Herbie also seems to like do a little jump while he is in the box with Trouble.

I am 26 years old, way too impulsive but yet I can afford vet's bills as I will alsway go without something if my animals need it. I am making the space today as I have a big cage for my two boys Pip & Squeak so I will give Trouble their cage unless I can completely make Herbie and Trouble best mates. Anyone got any ideas on how to do this. They are chatting a bit to each other and Troulbe seems to be folowing Herbie around.

Any help would be grateful oh and pictures of Trouble will be posted as soon as I can borrow my mum's digital camera.

It must have been fate. I started with two then decided to get two girls and that turned into 4 and then i took another one on. I now have 7. The cost is a bit much, i'd be cheeper with a dog ;D but i wouldn't part with them for anything. I used to go out for bar lunches twice a week with my friends and their kids so now its just once a week so the piggies get the best. The things we do for our pets. xx
 
I think maybe trouble likes herbie! A bit of chattering isn't a problem. Baby boars actually tend to get on with older boars better
 
Trouble seems urrrmmm how can I put this. He is urm :laugh: trying to have his wicked way with him a bit even though Herbie is 6 times his size hi is still trying to have his wicked way with him. What does this mean?
 
firstly, if the piggy is only 3 weeks old then are you sure it is a he? as it very hard to tell the sex of poggy at that age. secondly if piggy came from a petshop it should be quarentined (sp) for at least 3 weeks to protect your other piggies. thirdly to introduce piggies after a quarentine period you do this in neutral terrority, perhaps at play time and slowly make this time longer. guinea pigs from petshops can take 2-3 weeks before showing any illness, just read so many threads on here about piggies being ill or dying bought from petshops. people on here who live in the UK go for rescue piggies not petshop piggies. i would suggest taking piggy to a piggy savy vet and getting it sexed and a check up. then quarentine for 2-3 weeks and then slowly introdue to your other piggies. hoping this helps. good luck. Buying piggies only leads to an unscrupulous breeders breeding more piggies for profit which leads to more unwanted piggies being dumped. Its a never ending circle which can only be broken if people stopped paying for guinea pigs no matter how cute they appear in pet shops.
 
I've bought all 5 of my girls from a pet shop and they were all healthy when I got them. They are happy girls and I'm glad I got them!

After getting the first two I looked into getting 2 from a local rescue but was let down quite badly (the person said that she did not want to give them up seeing that she had spend £60 taking one of them to the vet!) Maybe I should have persevered down that road and looked outside Fife, but I was rather upset.

Anyway, I certainly do not regret having gotten mine from a pet shop! I'm not saying that pet shops don't have their faults, but from my experience, you can get healthy happy pigs from them!

I got one of my girls from a pet shop and she to is a happy healthy pig. The lady who sold her to me was also very helpful and gave me lots of advise on how to bond her with Connie. After following her instructions, my two are very happy together :smitten:
