First off, I would like to say "Hi all!" I am new to posting but I have been lurking for a while.

I guess I should provide some vitals first: my piggy's name is Sassy, she's a Peruvian and she is about three years old I found a small lump behind her ear, just on her right shoulder blade :(. It is jelly bean sized and it moves with her skin (it also seems to be the same colour). I wouldn't say that it's rock hard, but it isn't exactly squishy either. She hasn't shown any behavioural changes, and she didn't seem bothered by me touching it.

Any ideas as to what this could be? What should I do?
Thanks in advance.

it could be a fatty lump, which is totally harmless and won't cause your pig any discomfort. then again it could be something serious.
it's near impossible for anyone to judge without seeing it though, and with things like this i would advise taking the word of anyone over the internet. take her to a vet to be on the safe side.

I would take her to the vet definitely, good luck let us know how you get on xx

Welcome to posting :) try not to panic if she's eating and acting normal you don't have to worry yet! Just get her to a vet and get it looked at, sounds to me like either a fatty lump or an abscess, does she have a cage mate? Sometimes if a pig gets a scratch it can get infected and turn into an abscess, they'll usually keep filling with pus and eventually burst, when they burst you're best flushing them out and packing them to kill off the infection and eventually it just scabs over and heals. Best getting a vets diagnosis though, good luck x

My piggies are prone to lumps which have all turned out to be large spots. When my first piggie got a lump I took her to the vet who wanted to do a biopsy. When the vet put the needle in the lump pus came out. PIggies are prone to these when they pull a hair whilst scratching. Get a vet to check out the lump for you but hopefully it will be nothing more than a big spot!

THANKS EVERYONE! i will take her to the vet asap! *fingers crossed* i hope it is nothing major =(

Hi and welcome to the forum from us in OZ (aka Australia) :)
Sorry to hear about Sassy and the lump, it could be anything :p
Have you got a good piggie vet? If you need to know of a good one, put your general area into this thread and somebody should be able to advise.
Good luck and keep as informed xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Welcome to the forum. :)

If the vet is at all concerned about the contents of the lump he may choose to do a fine-needle aspiration, which would show if the lump is a cyst or abscess. The initial "treatment" for most lumps is just basic monitoring, checking that it doesn't grow or change, although a diagnosis on what the lump actually is, is important.

Abscesses require a fair bit of treatment, but there is usually an underlying cause of the abscess (e.g. a bite from another pig) - unless you have reason to suspect your pig has had a physical injury I would imagine an abscess is unlikely.

Fatty lumps and sebaceous cysts are the most common and are nothing to worry about, but as everyone else has advised it is wise to have it checked out, just to be sure.
