he is being xrayed this afternoon

am picking him up at 6.30

in the past week, despite being fed tons of good stuff and generally treated like a king, he hasn't gained any weight at all

dodger on the hand , on the same treatment, has gained 100g

vet worried that there is something internal going on like a tumour

am so so sad and worried about what to do for the best

what would you do?

if they say there is something going, would you have the animal put to sleep?

i don't want him to suffer but i can't align the pig that was wheeking and snuggling with me earlier to an animal that should be pts

how do you know if they are in pain? what signs should i be looking out for ?
sorry i know this sounds thick but he doesn't SEEM to be in pain-but how would i know?

I'd be inclined to think that any illnesses painful to us are painful to animals so perhaps discuss with your vet when you collect him. Pain is controllable.
If your boy has been eating well, could be a positive note as an animal in pain will not eat well.
All paws crossed here for you - don't make any hasty decisions and a second opinion is always an option if you are not happy with any diagnosis/prognosis.
Good luck and keep us posted on things please x

Trust me, you would know if he was in pain which it certainly doesn't sound like he is.

My Eleanor was sadly pts last month the day she was diagnosed with kidney failure :( She had lost a lot of weight. She seemed fine in the morning but she had stopped eating and after she had been examined and a tumour was found, she lost a lot of blood and went downhill rapidly.
The vet explained that Ellie wouldn't have been in great amounts of pain at that time but she soon would have been :( I also didn't want to force feed her just to keep her here a little longer. That seemed selfish as it wasn't going to make her better :(

I seriously do not think you are at this stage so don't worry. Wait to hear the outcome of the x ray first.

you will just know if he is in pain, but don't worry. *if* they did find anything, he would be put on pain relief straight away. my chesney had a suspected tumour and was put on medication and pain relief. when he was admitted to the vets they made sure he was comfortable.

i know it's easier said than done, because i am the same, but don't get too far ahead before you have the results. just take one step at a time. x

thank you everyone

am back
good news-xray was completely clear
bladder clear
abdomen clear
no sign of anything untoward at all

he has got to go back next week to be weighed again and to have an injection in case of mites
until then i will just keep feeding him and hoping for the best

vet said she had given him hay and veggies to see him eating and he was tucking in with no problem at all

it's very very weird

Good news on X-rays. How much weight has he lost overall? And for how long?

good news about the xrays. has he been ill recently, as it can take a while for them to build back up? or been stressed for any reason?

i am very very worried about danny today

he look ill today-which he hasn't previously

he has drunk and drunk and drunk this morning
his front is soaking wet-
he has been eating softened pellets and had a go at the veg but is constantly going back to the water bottle
his eyes look a bit sticky

am completely out of my depth here and so worried

What was he being treated by the vet for before?

Please weigh him daily and record the weights so you can see how much he is eating.

If he is drinking lots this could indicate a Urine infection or possibly a problem with his kidneys. Where abouts in the country are you? We may be able to suggest a cavy savy vet nearby. I would recomend taking him back to the vets.

we were at the vets last night-he had a full body x ray which nothing wrong internally
he was weighed last night too and has gained no weight all week

he was being treated because i was worried about him being then
that was the symptom i had noticed
i am in south manchester
he has been on baytril for a week and vet gave him another week's worth last night

poo normal and no sign of any wee problems

Okay, He's gaining no weight. Is he losing weight?

If he isn't losing that is a good sign and shows food is going in. Please weigh him daily for a while. What does the vet think is wrong?

One of our girls Treacle will drink a lot on Baytril, but as I said above increased drinking can be a sign of other issues. Have the vets tested his Urine in case of an infection?

Beech House Vets in Warrington are recomended for piggies.

If he's been on Baytril for a time, have you given him a probiotic ? Baytril is harsh on their tums and can play havoc with appetite :(
I would attempt to syringe feed your boy to keep his gut moving - it is so important he keeps his gut moving, the less he eats, the more risk he is at.
Mash his pellets to a softish consistency and use a 5ml syringe with the end cut off and filed down to make sure there are no sharp edges.
I'm so sorry you are having to go through this but he really needs help with feeding.
Stupid question - did the vet check his teeth ? Many only look at the front whereas the back teeth are where the problems can be...maybe a spur that is causing him pain or overgrown molars which will need filing, again, another factor to him not eating much.

she did look at the front and then she said that if he still hadn't gained by next week she would investigate his mouth further

i have mashed up his nuggets today and he has been eating them, he has also eaten veg
but he will eat a ppellet, then drink like mad, then eat a pellet and drink like mad

no blood test done

i have been trawling the internet this afternoon and have been wondering if it could be his teeth-he is very wet on his front today but that is the first time he has been like that

he is pooing normally which suggests that food is going through

no to probiotic-he has been on baytril a week and it was prescribed in case an infection was causing weightloss iyswim-it's not the baytril that has caused the weightloss

Great News, I hope he gets back to normal now.

which vets do you use? ashleigh vets in whalley range is excellent. we see aidan but have seen sergio aswell. aidan is an amazing vet. perhaps you could go there? it's so awful when you know something isn't right but don't know what. x

Hmmm at a bit of a loss here but it does sound like his teeth could be contributing :(
Can you get some Critical Care or similar from a vet ? It is very good for poorly piggies who aren't eating well.
Hay keeps their teeth in good shape so if he's not nomming on much hay, his teeth could be overgrown as they grow at an alarming rate :(
Excessive thirst could be a kidney issue or blood tests could show diabetes which is controllable in piggies.
If your vet is not an exotic, they may ask you to continue with the antibiotics but they don't really appear to be doing anything as there should be an improvement if an infection is the issue. I had this issue last year and the vet who was general trained was puzzled so referred us to an exotic who sorted the problem out within minutes and saved our girl :)
I really would consider finding a savvy vet if possible who may have answers for you and begin the treatment he needs.
Know how hard it is having a piggy so ill but better to explore all avenues available.

it really does sound like it could be his teeth. bisc and ches both had similar symptoms when they needed a dental. sometimes spurs can be hidden out of the way. usually our vet can't see many with bisc and then when he does the dental, there are loads of tiny ones hidden away down the side, like the cheek teeth sides, if that makes sense.

with ches, he had spurs, elongated tooth roots, and gaps between some teeth that had become infected. he had similar symptoms, he amazingly was still eating some foods, although it was soft foods and mashed pellets etc. we were syringe feeding also. he drank more, after each pellet, as the water is filling, and also can numb any pain in the mouth sometimes aswell.

because nothing is showing up on the xrays, i really think it could be to do with his teeth. did they xray his mouth aswell?

they just did a whole body x ray
they didn't do a specific mouth x ray

ok, well at least you know your next move now if he doesn't improve. i hope he does though. and aidan at ashleigh vets is honestly brilliant. i know my two bunnies wouldn't be here now if it wasn't for him. x

thanks for the tip
will bear it in mind

the drinking seems to have calmed down this evening anyway
