I have been considering sponsoring a dog for a long time I can't have a dog as a pet due to the fact that I live in a small flat and I have the piggies and a hamster but I loved walking my sisters dog at Christmas and kept meaning to sponsor one. I had looked at the Dogs Trust but decided to consider a local animal shelter as I would like to be involved if at all possible with the dog concerned by visiting him and taking him for walks. I kept meaning to but kept forgetting today in my local supermarket the local cat and dog shelter had a stall and they were saying how much much they were struggling and with renewed determination to sponsor a doggy I went up there this afternoon an after meeting the inmates I chose this guy, I took him out for a walk and fell in love with him he seems to have took to me like a duck to water and he's a great character and very loving he is thought to be much older than the 8 years they originally thought he was an was very poorly last week but recovering well. I am taking him for another walk on Monday.

Here's the animals shelters link and I will post a few pictures later on this evening

Basil is beautiful. There are some lovely dogs there, I'm a sucker for the lurcher types. Hope you both enjoy lots of walks. xx

Great plan to support your local rescue, it's a sad fact of the credit crunch that the first thing people do is stop their sponsorship money to charities when they're feeling the squeeze.
I'm sure Basil will really appreciate your support, and it's great that you can go and visit him too and help out at the shelter. Look forward to seeing more photos of him :))

aww good for you, what a lovely feeling that must be. He is lovely.

I check out my local animal rescue place every day and it kills me that so many animals arrive due to 'family moved and couldnt take pets' or 'owners could no longer afford to keep them'......why oh why would you move into a place that you couldnt take pets? maybe i am stupid or something, but i have had hard times in my life but i would never ever give up one of my animals unless i couldnt give it the real care it needed ie vet care and food, i would starve myself first and do without most things to keep them, i think people give them up too easily, I'm not judging, i just know i couldnt, they are my family, surely people wouldnt give up their kids if they couldnt afford to feed them? i dont know, maybe i am stupid.

on a lighter note, i run a xmas club and the interest we make on the account is used to sponsor dogs at this rescue, we also have a whip round to top it up so we can do as many as possible...just wish we cold help more.

Awwww Basil is lovely, I'm sure he'll enjoy his walkies.
I used to sponsor a dogy through the DT but when we first got our mortgage I had to stop non essential things :(
It's nice you can sponsor one locally and visit/go for walks :)

I'm sponsoring a bunny at a rescue atm :)
