I joined one of theses groups and wish I didn't.

The amount of bad advice and clueless owners is unreal.

Small cages. Wrong food. Too much bad food. Weekly baths.

Ughhh at least this place gives me hope

Alot where open to advice.

But so many others where just giving bad advice.

It would send you crazy trying to give proper advice

I am a member of a handful on FB that i have dwindled down from quite a few I joined. These seem to give correct advice but I don't post regularly. I will however have my say if I see something I think is wrong lol.

My cousin has a pair of piggies and she was telling me how her FB group were "great for suggesting home remedies" which made me cringe a bit and it was rather difficult to remain polite! She seemed well informed about cages and diet from things she'd read on there, but definitely not health!

Hmm. Unfortunate that’s not a rare occurrence. I was also on a FB group but left it after disagreeing with a lot of the information being given on there. And some people seeming to congratulate people who intentionally breed their piggies. Too much hard work trying to correct some of their...theories.

The most annoying thing is seeing people feed them kale and spinach and carrots everyday.

The if you tell them it's bad for them. Thier like. Been doing it for over a year now with no problems.

:(

I was in hospital with a woman once who (when we were talking about our respective guineas) said she'd been told at one point she was only supposed to feed fresh veg maybe once every couple of weeks.

That said, I've also seen on rabbit forums where an owner has mused putting off spaying their does because apparently spaying them sooner gave a greater chance of the doe developing a large dewlap, and said owner didn't like dewlaps. Not only that, but this was encouraged by others in the thread.

We're not just brilliant for advice compared to Facebook, but I suspect we'd give better advice about other pets like rabbits than rabbit forums do. And then we wonder why we get new people joining and looking for medical fixes from home.

I won't do Facebook full stop. It's poison for youre mind. Most antisocial thing there is.

That's ridiculous, probably show breeders or people who show there rabbits for looks, how sad. It's animal cruelty

I honestly don't remember any more than that, just that they didn't want the rabbit to develop a dewlap. If there was ever a list of ridiculous reasons not to spay or neuter your pet, I'd hope that was near the top.

Its really shallow. I do hope these kinds of people get what's coming soon. I believe in karma

It reminds me of the German shepard dog breed, they have bred them to have a sloped spine at the back, causing them to die early from spine or leg issues,( have to be pts) I can't remember, but all this is just to make the dog look taller at the front with its posture, for shows

Hip dysplasia. We had one, same thing happened to him, thankfully it was caught before he was fully grown and surgery was available to fix it.

That's really good, glad you caught it in time 👍

Um, I feed mine kale and carrot (nearly) every day and have been doing it for years, but I absolutely get your wider point. Thing is that having pets is like having children, there are things we know we do not under any circumstances do and then there are the things that we may or may not choose to do. Personally I find the veg rules too difficult to follow. I doubt I would give them any greens at all if I followed all the do’s and dont’s, so I choose to be sensible, watch my pigs and keep to what has always worked for me (my best friend is also a vet who regularly reads up on the latest pig studies to help her piggie patients, so that helps!)

But it’s a bit like people who have a hyper active dog, push it away (makes it more hyper) and don’t walk it and then either give it up or cage it the whole time. All pets need hard work and common sense. Sadly, common sense is often lacking in many people! 😂

I think the veg rules aren’t particularly difficult to follow. There are some veg you can feed daily, and then there are others meant as an occasional treat or once/twice a week. And they’re grouped which does help I think.

People on here can only advise. After that it’s up to the pet owner whether to take that advise or not. The forum will be hereif/when any issues arise.
